JAMES GLENN HERRING, surrounded by his family, passed away peacefully at their vacation home in Orange Beach, Alabama on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Diagnosed with cancer less than three months ago, Glenn diligently fought his battle with courage and grace.
Originally from Montgomery, Glenn graduated from Central Academy in 1980. After a stint of playing football at The University of Southern Mississippi “Southern Miss”, he returned to Montgomery, married the love of his life on April 28, 1984 at Normandale Baptist Church and joined the Montgomery Fire Department as a Paramedic. After serving the Department for four years, Glenn and Wendy relocated to Birmingham, making Hoover their home where they started a family and successful carpet-cleaning business – G&W Carpet Cleaning, Incorporated.
When searching for words to adequately describe Glenn, his wife and children were quick to respond with a list of admirable adjectives that accurately depicted their husband and father, conjointly viewed as the family rock of unconditional love… Wendy is grateful for her life’s partner of un-ending dedication and loyalty. Lindsey described her father as strong, hardworking --their protector. Ross chose words such as friendly and caring…while Parker characterized him as a guardian --softhearted and intuitive. Loved and respected by many as a kind, generous and gentle man, Glenn will be immeasurably missed by each and every person whose life he has touched.
He leaves to treasure his memory his wife of 31 years, Wendy Rene Williams Herring and their three adoring children, Lindsey Nicole Herring, Ross Hunter Herring and Parker Reed Herring; his parents, Donald Ray Herring, Sr. and Dewie Mae Haney Herring of Montgomery; one brother, Donald (Donnie) Ray Herring Jr.; a sister-in-law Vickie Williams Parrish and her husband David; a brother-in-law, John Anthony (Tony) Williams; four nieces Brooke Parrish Phillips (Wes), Lacey Parrish Moody (Justin), Whitney Parrish Sheffield (William) and Courtney Parrish Faulkner (Turner); one nephew Brandon Heath Herring (Kelly); and seven great nieces and nephews, Brock Ethan Herring, Camp Phillips, Collier Phillips, John Turner Faulkner, Parrish Moody, Will Sheffield and Winston Sheffield.
In the final days of his life, Glenn was surrounded by many of his life-long friends who wish to celebrate the amazing journey they took with their friend, the one who bound them together for their forty plus years of friendship. This celebration of Glenn’s life will take place at Leak Memory Chapel at 2:00 o’clock on Tuesday June 16, 2015 followed by graveside at Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1-2 pm. The Reverend Doug Ferguson, the Minister of Mountaintop Community Church where Glenn and Wendy are members will officiate. Pallbearers include Heath Herring, nephew; Ken Azar, Danny Harris, Robbie Kirk, Brad McCorvey, Dean O’Ferrell, Todd Shores, and Jay Spencer, all life-long friends. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Glenn Herring was an angel here on earth. He lovingly cared and provided for his family with a level of dedication and commitment far beyond most. His family finds peace in the assurance that he has joined our Lord to rejoice in the Golden Streets of Heaven. We, in this wonderful world, will celebrate his life!
