

Dr. James Richard Owens, age 87, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Born to Joseph Eugene Owens and Josephine Crosby Owens, he grew up in Prattville and settled in Montgomery. Dr. Owens attained his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama, his masters degree from Auburn University and his doctorate from UAB in Birmingham, AL.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Larry Dean Owens and his grandson Chase Anthony Pollard.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Elaine Owens; his daughters, Stacey Owens Lowman and Kelly Owens Singleton (David); his grandchildren, Kayla Michele Frederick, Hunter Austin Lowman; his great grandchildren, Graysan Frederick, Brinley Frederick, Knox Frederick, Oliver Lowman, Sophie Pollard and Jovie Pollard as well as five nephews.
A professor at Auburn University of Montgomery, Dr. Owens served as Assistant Dean of the School of Sciences. After serving in the Navy where he achieved the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class, he settled into his roles as an educator, family man and church member. Serving as a deacon for both Dalraida Baptist Church and Eastern Hills Baptist, he also taught Sunday School and Children's Vacation Bible School. Dr. Owens enjoyed growing beautiful orchids, spending time with his cherished family, playing computer games, and watching Alabama football. He will be remembered as a mentor and an educator to thousands of students throughout his career.
A family and friends visitation for James will be held Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 1:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Rd, Montgomery, Alabama 36109, followed by a celebration of life chapel service at 2:00 PM officiated by Dr. Rick Marshall. Services will conclude with a burial at Greenwood Cemetery.
