Jean Austin Planutis passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 5, 2020, at the age of 101. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Claire Planutis Linder, and her son-in-law Steve Linder (Colonel, USAF, Retired). She also leaves her niece Ann Malhoit (Ken) of Monteagle, TN, and her great-niece Gina Quarles (Steven) of Nashville, TN, to both of whom she was especially close. Many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, too many to name here, also cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Alex Joseph Planutis (Major, USA), her parents Robert Edward and Eppie Austin, three brothers, and four sisters. She attended Peabody College in Nashville, TN, and was a popular amateur pianist. She met her future husband on a crowed train during World War II, and they were married in 1946 after he returned from the Pacific. As he was an artillery officer, they served two tours in West Germany and in various Army posts in the United States. After her husband’s retirement, they moved to the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, where her husband was a realtor and she worked for the Army as a bond examiner.
In 2010 she moved to Montgomery to be near her daughter, and lived in Oak Grove Inn for over 10 years. Her family wishes to thank the staff of Oak Grove Inn and the kind caregivers of Answered Prayer. She will be interred with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Due to concerns about the further spread of the corona virus, the family has decided against a visitation at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you consider a donation to the ongoing restoration of the Austin family cabin (Lonesome) in Burns, Tennessee www.lonesomehistoricsite.org.
