

John W. “Jake” Chambers, age 93, of Montgomery, passed away Saturday, March 9th. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Alice Rebecca Anderson and John Wesley Chambers, sisters Pauline Lowery and Annie Cooper, and brothers Sam, George, and James Luther “Luke” Chambers.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mildred E. Johnston; two children, Sandra Ginter (Peter) of Vestavia Hills, Alabama and Karen Parker (Robert) of Menton, France; two grandchildren, Robert Peter Ginter, Homewood, Alabama and Karen Michele Yearout (Alex), Birmingham, Alabama, and one great granddaughter, Adrianne LaBreck Yearout; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was born in Clanton, Alabama and moved to Montgomery in 1940 where he met his future wife, Mildred. They were married in Dalraida Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and participated in all aspects of church life. He was honored as Deacon Emeritus in 2007.
He was proud of serving his country in the US Army during WWII. He returned to Montgomery where he worked at S. G. Johnston Nursery. In 1956 he founded Chambers Nursery in Dalraida where he continued the work he loved for more than 50 years. During this time Jake landscaped many homes in Montgomery and surrounding areas, and his legacy lives on through his work.
Visitation will be at 1:00pm on Thursday, March 14th, at Leak Memory Chapel. The service will be held at 2:00pm, officiated by Pastor Rick Evans and Doyle Roberson, Minister of Senior Adults. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Senior Adult Fund at Dalraida Baptist Church.
