He was born and raised in Loango, Alabama, oldest of eight children. He enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) at the age of 17 and worked hard in Louisiana, Nevada and Alabama. He served overseas with the 16th General Hospital during WWll, came home and married his wife of 71 years. He went on to retire from the railroad and was “retired longer than he worked.” He loved and was loved by many and is now with his bride in heaven.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Greatha Williamson Fendley; his parents, Furman and Minnie Fendley; brothers, Max Fendley, Mike Fendley and sisters, Louise Cody and Edith Jacobs.
John is survived by two daughters, Shiela (Fleetwood) Rice and Debbie (Johnny) Hargrove; sisters, Margaret Crenshaw, Anne Penninger; brother, Tony Fendley; 7 grandchildren, Eric Magnus, Brett (Lacey) Magnus, Yvette (Craig) Cherry, Yvonne Hargrove, Joseph (Jenn) Hargrove, Laura (Paul) Daniel; and 8 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2019, from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Leak Memory Chapel.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 11:00am at Leak Memory Chapel, with burial to follow at Greenwood Serenity Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Eric Magnus, Brett Magnus, Joseph Hargrove, Paul Daniel, Craig Cherry and Bradley Cherry. Honorary pallbearers will be the administration and staff of John Knox Manor Nursing Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church or John Knox Manor Nursing Home.
