

John Alonzo (JY, Lonnie) Smith, age 82, of Montgomery, Alabama passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024. He was preceded in death by his father Charles Stegall Smith and mother, Willie Grey Supple Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Duffell Smith, daughter Angie (Jimmie) Roberts, son Chris Smith, granddaughter Tori Patterson, and grandson Jay Singleton; brothers Charlie Gray Smith and Alva Smith; sisters Ruby (Mike) Hassell, Frances Watts, Amanda (John) Dews; and many beloved nieces, nephews and extended family.
John had a strong work ethic. He was employed by ALDOT for 37 years, proudly served in the 926th Eng Grp of the U.S. Army Reserve as well as briefly in the 81st RSC for 31 years including a tour of duty during Desert Storm and did private surveying mainly in Lowndes County for 20 years. After a brief retirement, he worked 14 years for both Earth Tech and Volkert Engineering Consultants. John was a Mayflower descendant and enjoyed being a member and serving as a local and state officer in the Mayflower Society. He was also a descendant and member of The Jamestown Colony. Не was a humble servant who loved his God, family, country and the Auburn Tigers.
A visitation for John will be held Friday, January 3, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109. A funeral service will occur the next day on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 2:00 PM with a 30 minute visitation starting at 1:30 pm at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109. A graveside service will follow the funeral service at Greenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers for John's services will be Landel Odom, Gary Smith, Conrad Smith, Norman Duffell, Mark Evans and Michael Oglesby with Chuck Francisco officiating.
Donations may be made to Wounded Warriors or Tunnel to Towers.
