Karen Thornton Rogers, 64, passed away on Sunday morning, October 28, 2018 after a brief illness. She was welcomed to heaven by her Savior, Jesus, and her daughters Dara Chandler and Sara Rogers, and her stepfather, Quinton D. Allen. Missing her terribly but rejoicing that she is healed, and walking, leaping and praising God, is her mother, Lucille Allen, her sister, Leslie Thornton Britt, her brothers, Chris Thornton (Deboraha), Doug Allen (Bonnie), Don Allen (Jo Ann), and Steve Allen; her niece Tracy, three nephews, Jason (Crystal), John (Kerry), and Matthew (Carrie); her great-nieces, Chloe , Aubrey, and Nylah; great-nephews, Ethan ,Garrett and Noah; and many friends and work family. Especially missing their Kinner are the loves of her life, grand-daughters, Kaitlyn, Shelby, and Rachel Chandler.
Karen was known for her compassion, and was often sought out by others when they needed a kind word or encouragement. She was also admired by everyone who knew her for her strength, facing everyday with courage in spite of her physical limitations. She graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in 1972 and years later, as an adult, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Troy University in Montgomery. She was an accountant with the Alabama Department of Public Health, Office of Financial Services, located in the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery. In the office, her quick wit and humor was legendary. Her good-natured roasts of employees who retired or transferred were often a highlight of a work event. Her favorite translation of scripture was from The Amplified Bible. She believed that with God, nothing was impossible, and one of her favorite scriptures was Jeremiah 23:29, “Is not my word like fire [that consumes all that cannot endure the test],” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer that breaks the [most stubborn] rock [in pieces]?” She loved to watch the 700 Club, and also listen to Joel Osteen’s uplifting messages. She was inspired by Joni Eareckson Tada and supported her ministry to provide wheelchairs for the handicapped. She had an entrepreneurial spirit and began a cleaning company as a young woman – “Cinderella Services – Let us Turn Your Pumpkin into a Palace”. She was forced to sell it when she was diagnosed with colon cancer at 26 and the complications from surgery resulted in a stroke and the loss of her right leg below the knee. She dreamed of beginning new enterprises after her planned retirement in December 2018. However, God scheduled an appointment and her attendance was required. Heaven is more precious now for all who love her, and we look forward to that joyful eternal reunion with her and our dear Lord.
Visitation for Karen will be Sunday, November 4, 2018 from 4-6 PM at Leak Memory Chapel with services on Monday, November 5, 2018 at 11 AM at Leak Memory Chapel. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
