
Leo J. Drum, Jr., age 96, died Friday, January 6, 2012 at a local hospital. Born in Montgomery, AL he attended The Barnes School, went on to Georgia Tech and graduated with the highest honor in 1935 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by TVA and later by the York Air Conditioning Company. In April 1941, he was called to active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers remaining on active duty for five years of which three and a half were spent in the European Theater of Operations (1942-1945). He was awarded The Bronze Star for Meritorious Service and ended his active service a lieutenant colonel. In 1946, he founded Capital Refrigeration Company, which he owned and operated until the company was sold in 1991. A lifetime member of Temple Beth-Or, he served on its Board of Trustees for many years. He was a long time member of the Standard Club, served several terms on its Board of Directors, and in 1953 was its President. He was elected to the Georgia Tech Engineering Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a member of the Montgomery Rotary Club for over 60 years and a member of the Montgomery Country Club. Mr. Drum was a registered engineer in Alabama and Georgia. He was a member of several national engineering societies. His wife of many years, Martha Hall Drum, preceded him in death. There were no children. He is survived by cousins, Dr. B.H. Eichold II and Elizabeth Eichold Walmsley of Mobile, Mrs. Ruth E. Montag of Atlanta and by special friends, Jeanne and James Drummond. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Friday, January 20, 2012 at Leak- Memory Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Rabbi Elliot Stevens of Temple Beth-Or will be officiating the services. Burial will be in the family lot at Eternal Rest Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be H.F. Levy, Robert S. Weil, Earl Garner, Bonner Patrick, Frank Stakely, and James Drummond. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements under the direction of Leak-Memory Chapel, Montgomery, AL.
