It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Malone Nelson Pilgrim on November 1, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on August 13, 1943, Malone was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose warmth and unwavering optimism touched the lives of all who knew her.
A 1965 graduate of Huntingdon College with a degree in English, Malone had an enduring passion for poetry and literature. She was an avid reader and a talented painter, often finding inspiration in the world around her. Her love for learning led her to deeply value Bible study, enriching both her faith and those she shared it with. Her optimistic spirit and positive outlook on life were a source of encouragement to many.
Malone was a devoted member of St. James Church, where she especially loved her Sunday School class. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she found great joy and fellowship within her church community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Edward Nelson, Sr. and Mary Malone Nelson; her brother, William Edward Nelson, Jr.; and her brothers-in-law, Charles Warner Still and Harold Douglas Bowden.
Left to honor her memory is her beloved husband of 59 years, Carl Owen Pilgrim. She is also survived by her loving daughters, Jennifer Pilgrim Loard (Wes), Julie Pilgrim Cowden (Brett), and Mary Ruth Pilgrim; her treasured grandchildren, John Wesley Loard III, Camilla Malone Loard, Catherine Cowden Byram (Grayson), Elizabeth Malone Cowden, and Mary Louise Cowden. Malone is also mourned by her dear sisters, Elizabeth Nelson Still and Nancy Nelson Bowden; her sisters-in-law, Jerona Trammell Nelson and Anne Pilgrim Kracke (Bob); her brother-in-law, Jerry Pilgrim (Sharon); and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Malone's legacy is one of love, kindness, and a deep appreciation for the beauty in life. Her gentle spirit, unwavering optimism, and generous heart will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A celebration of Malone's life will be held at St. James Church on Sunday, November 17, at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. James Church or a charity of your choice in honor of Malone's love for faith and education.
