
Brown, Mary Ann Higgs, PhD, 79, a resident of Montgomery, Alabama died Monday, October 16, 2017 after a brief illness. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bart Brown, and her parents, Angeline Elizabeth Rucker Higgs and John Zachariah Higgs, Sr., as well as her parents-in-law, Ruth Burnham Brown and Leman Bart Brown. Survivors include her daughters Ruth Brown McMichens of Huntsville and Nancy Brown Lee of Montgomery and their husbands Timothy Troy McMichens and Martin Alan Lee. Survivors also include her grandchildren who were the joy of her life: Ryan Patrick McMichens and his wife Julia Richon McMichens of New York, New York, Meredith Catherine Lee of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Troy Robert McMichens and his wife McCarley Buchanan McMichens of Birmingham, and Rachel Harrison Lee of Montgomery. She is also survived by her brothers Robert Lawton Higgs, Sr. and his wife Nancy DeVore Higgs of Birmingham, John Zachariah Higgs, Jr. and his wife Michele Crow Higgs of Madison, and her sister-in-law Jane Brown Entenza and her husband Tommy Entenza of Jacksonville, Florida. Other survivors include her nieces and nephews.
Dr. Brown received her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Alabama. She continued her education receiving her M.S. from Rice University and her PhD from the University of Alabama. She did her post-doctoral work at Iowa State University before moving to Ozark and beginning her career at Troy University at Ft. Rucker and later in Dothan. After her retirement from Troy University she relocated to Montgomery to be closer to her grandchildren. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Montgomery where she was a member of United Methodist Women, the Tower Sunday School Class, taught Sunday School, and participated in countless bible studies.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph Ministry at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, 2416 West Cloverdale Park, Montgomery, AL 36106, or to the charity of one’s choice.
A service celebrating her life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery on Monday, October 23, 2017 at noon in the sanctuary. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. A private interment will be held at a later date.
