
Opal Elizabeth Scott Hammett, a long-time Montgomery resident, died July 13, 2011 at her son Tom’s home in Chattanooga, TN. She lived to enjoy her 91st birthday on June 12. She was predeceased by George Hammett, her husband of 54 years, a sister, Dorothy (Ken) Wright, a brother, Bill (Mary) Scott and three special-needs adopted grandchildren. Survivors include her four sons, Willie (Janet), Ken (Judy), George Jr. (Cherry), and Tom (Faye) along with numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Various careers included working with WRGA Radio, WSFA Radio, WHHY Radio, WFMI Radio, then working with the State of Alabama the first Chief of the Bureau of Publicity and Information for the state. She also worked in Child Nutrition and with the Prison Commission. She had many interests and hobbies. She sang in the church choir for many years. She knitted intricate items well into her 90th year. She helped organize the Sweet Adelines in Montgomery. She was a lifelong band booster from the early days when Robert E. Lee opened in 1955. She supported the various bands when her beloved boys were at Lee, Jeff Davis, Auburn University and Troy University and was an associate member of the Auburn Knights Alumni Association. The family is especially appreciative of the loving care she received from Tom, Faye, Charity, Emily, Stephanie, and Rosalie during her final months. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 17, 2011 from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home. Her memorial service will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 11:00 AM at White Chapel-Greenwood Funeral Home in Montgomery and led by Rev. Mike Northcutt of Eastmont Baptist Church.
