Surviving are children, Elizabeth Leigh Wiatt (James Streeter, Jr.), Robert Kenneth Hayes, Jr. (Sharon), and Anne Pegues Gass (Daniel); grandchildren, James Streeter Wiatt III (Carrie), Elizabeth Owen Wiatt, Emily Alston Wiatt, Elizabeth Anne Gass Lytle (Jacob), and William Daniel Gass; great grandchildren, Charlotte Camellia Wiatt and James Streeter Wiatt IV; and brother, Col. William Haskell.
He was predeceased by his wife of over 61 years, Elizabeth (Bette) Statham Pegues; sisters, Ruby Virginia Gatton and Opal Jeanette Daugherty; brothers, Ronald Eugene, Col. Cecil Howard, and Charles Edward, Jr.
Born on 27 August 1929 in Bristol, TN to Charles Edward Hayes and Mae Cordelia
Crumley, he moved with the family in 1934 to Salisbury, MD. Montgomery was his home since 1975 when he arrived at Maxwell AFB for duty at Air University Headquarters. Service in the USAF spanned nearly 28 years including Korean War air combat duty as an F-86 Sabre Jet Fighter pilot and duties in Vietnam, Taiwan, Alaska and Iran. He attended the University of Maryland and was a graduate of Arizona State University and the Air Command and Staff College. After leaving the USAF, he served with SouthTrust Bank in Montgomery as a Vice President. Ken trusted in Christ alone for the promise of eternal life and worshiped with believers at First Baptist Church of Montgomery.
A Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 from 10:30am-11:30am at Leak Memory Chapel, followed by a Celebration of Life, led by Jay Wolf. Pallbearers to include: Dan Gass, William Gass, Jacob Lytle, Chris Pegues, Mike Pegues, Streeter Wiatt, Jr., and Streeter Wiatt III. Honorary pallbearers are members of Poundstone Class of First Baptist Church of Montgomery and the “Misfits” golf group.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Montgomery, or the charity of your choice.
