

Ruby B. Mathews, affectionately known as "Be" to many and "Ma B" by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at the age of 86. Surrounded by loved ones in her Montgomery, Alabama home, Ruby left this world having lived a long, happy, and fulfilling life.
Ruby was born on November 26, 1937, in Wedowee, Alabama, the daughter of Myrtle and Leon McManus. Her early years were spent in Opelika, Alabama, and Oak Creek, Colorado, where she demonstrated an impressive intellect and a zest for learning. Ruby graduated from Opelika High School in 1954 at the remarkable age of 16. Following the path of many women of her era, she attended secretarial school and graduated from Massey Draughon Business College in Montgomery. Ruby's extraordinary typing skills (139 wpm), exceptional shorthand, and natural talent for graphic design made her a valuable asset in every role she undertook.
Ruby's career was marked by dedication and versatility. She served as the License Inspector for Montgomery during the 1970s, worked as an administrative assistant to the President of Getty Oil in Colorado, served as a legal secretary to Mr. Ralph Franco at Hill, Hill, Carter, Franco, Cole & Black, and was the Administrative assistant to the Reverend at the Church of the Ascension.
Ruby is survived by her four children: Tuwanna (Bill) Hinds and Wallace Harper of Montgomery, AL; Jamie (Gena) Harper of Wetumpka, AL; and Shara (Mike) McNamee of Chelsea, AL. Her legacy also lives on in her seven grandchildren: Kate McGee of Birmingham, AL; Harper McGee of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; Mac McNamee of Huntsville, AL; Bennett McNamee and Reeves McNamee of Chelsea, AL; Alivia Harper of Wetumpka, AL; and Hudson Rupert of Winter Park, FL. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy Mathews III; her mother, Myrtle Lee Barbour; her father, Leon McManus; her sister, Roberta “Pi” Barbour; and numerous cherished pets, including her constant companion, Whome, and her loving cat, Smudge.
Ruby will be remembered for her loving, kind-hearted nature and her sharp wit. Those who knew her best would say she didn't have a mean bone in her body. She had a passion for puzzles and was an avid reader, often consuming five books a week. Ruby had a deep love for reading and studying the Bible. Her knowledge of its teachings was evident when she shared her wisdom with others. She loved reading mysteries with Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie being among her favorite mystery writers. Ruby was also a creative spirit who loved painting, crafting, and sewing. She was known for her delicious cooking and baking, always experimenting with new recipes. Her love for culinary arts culminated in a cookbook containing over 700 recipes, which she meticulously typed and compiled as a gift for her children, grandchildren, and close friends.
Ruby was a woman of many talents, with a deep love of reading, a passion for cooking, and boundless creativity that shone in everything she did. Ruby’s spirit and passions will continue to live on through her children and grandchildren, who will cherish and carry forward her legacy of love and creativity and the values she instilled in them.
