Sara lived an extraordinary life and leaves an enduring legacy. Sara was born and raised in Ramer, Alabama, during the Great Depression before venturing into Montgomery. There, Sara met the love of her life––a young Georgia man with bright blue eyes, broad shoulders, and a warm demeanor. His name was Murray Perry, and they married in 1942. She and “Perry”––as she affectionately called him––bore a son, William, in 1944; and a daughter, Dorothy, in 1946.
For the next three decades, they traveled the country together as a military family before their final assignment in Northern California, where they finally settled. When Dorothy gave birth to her son, Sara took an active role in his upbringing. This became especially true after Murray’s untimely passing in 1987, as the three bonded not just in grief, but in determination to push forward. Dorothy was a flight attendant, and she could unquestionably rely upon Sara to care for her son while she was away. The three of them traveled the world together and shared many wonderful times.
Sara was known for her vivacious personality, as well as her kind heart. There was nothing she would not do to love, nurture, and protect those closest to her. Even as she prepared to join the Lord, she refused to allow her guests to leave with empty bellies. Those she befriended in San Diego agreed she was one of a kind.
Sara is now reunited with many who she loved dearly, including her mother, Gertrude Ellison; father, John Ellison; husband, Murray Perry; daughter, Dorothy Perry; son, William Perry; and six cherished siblings. She is survived by her sister, Betty Hall; grandchildren, Ryan Darby, Rachel Perry, Gunnar Perry, and Renee Perry; and dozens of nieces and nephews.
Sara will be laid to rest on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens beside her husband, on what would have been his 100th birthday.
A visitation for Sara will be held Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109. Following the visitation will be a graveside service at 2:00 PM at Greenwood Serenity Memorial Gardens, 909 Lincoln Road, Montgomery, AL 36109.
