It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doreen Armande Rollande (Sharpe) Hayward at 93 years young. "Do" had an unwavering determination and resiliency right to her final moments and leaves a legacy of the importance of family. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, James Hayward.
Doreen was born to Marie Louise (Lamoureux) and Nelson Sharpe on March 6, 1932, in Lachine, and was raised alongside sisters Gloria and Kay in Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie. Her childhood included many adventures on and around Bordeaux Street, as well as treasured summers spent at Camp Chapleau, Lac de l'Achigan and Lake Connelly. Doreen attended St. Dominic's School and St. Lambert's Convent, which gave her the foundation for her strong Catholic faith. Following her studies at the Notre Dame Secretarial School, Doreen worked in the personnel field of many sectors, including insurance, railway, and air transport. Doreen also partnered in two family-owned businesses. A lifelong learner, she loved reading and engaged in many courses and retreats, often with the goal of sharing her newfound knowledge with her family.
In 1956, Doreen married the love of her life, Jimmy, with whom she took great pride in raising three daughters. Over the years, Doreen and Jim created homes in Québec, Ontario, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Doreen took great pleasure in maintaining cherished relationships with all nine of her grandchildren, and leaves behind a legacy of home movies and letters documenting their milestones and time spent together. When she wasn't busy volunteering with the Hudson Ladies Auxiliary and numerous parishes and community organizations, Doreen somehow managed to find enough hours in the day for cooking, baking, travelling, cross-country skiing, gardening, walking, and taking in a sunset. She was always ready for a Scrabble or card game, a swim at the Hudson Yacht Club, or an evening at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Above all, she loved every moment spent with her family and lifelong friends. She will be remembered as vibrant and spirited living each day with purpose and joie de vivre.
Doreen will be greatly missed by her children Kathryn (Ross), Cheryl (Wes), and Beverley (Wally), and grandchildren Christopher (Stacy), James (Leah), Kayla (Kendell), Lauren (Kyle), Matthew (Megan), Lindsay (Brandon), Jenna (Euweng), Ryan and Erin. Great-grandmother to Quinn, Bennett, Cohen, Cameron, Chloe, Addison, Alia, Avery, Hudson, Hailey, Liv, and one more on the way. She leaves behind her brother- and sister-in-law Ken and Danie, loving nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
Her family would like to express their gratitude to all those who showed kindness and dedication to Doreen, including the staff of the Reminiscence Community at Sunrise of Mississauga.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 1020 Boul Laird, Mont-Royal.
The burial will follow at 11:45 a.m. at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, located at 4601 Chem. de la Côte-des-Neiges.
Family and friends are then invited to gather for lunch at 12:00 p.m. at Côte-des-Neiges Funeral Home, located at 4525 Chem. de la Côte-des-Neiges.
Donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
