Douglas is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Timms, their cherished son, Greg, his cherished son Marc-André (Édith) and his grandchildren Emie, Jesse, Luna and Charlotte.
Born in the Toronto area, Douglas was the son of Albert Barker and Iris Gauthier and the brother of Bert, Pat, Wade and Lori, all deceased. He studied at Loyola College in Montreal and at the University of Western Ontario, where he obtained a master’s degree in business administration. He fell in love with Montreal and spent the rest of his life here.
After several years with a major accounting firm, Douglas opened his own financial services company, Douglas Barker & Associates, and spent many happy years doing what he enjoyed most.
Douglas excelled in sports: football and hockey while in school, squash and golf throughout his adult life. He played an active role as President of Squash Quebec and of the Jesters’ Club Canada. He even tried pickleball.
But working with young people was what he liked best, and he spent many years coaching youngsters in squash and hockey at the MAA and with the NDG Hockey League respectively. His patience was legendary.
Douglas and Sharon spent many years travelling before and after retirement, more often than not ending up in Italy, their most favourite place. Numerous and exciting also were the trips with Douglas’s second love, his precious Austin Healey. Hanging out at Caffè Italia in Little Italy was a great pleasure too.
The family offers sincere thanks to Drs Barkun, Metrakos and Zogopoulos, and in particular to Dr Chaudhury, of the Royal Victoria Hospital, for their professionalism and patience in caring for Douglas, a most trying patient at times. The family also extends its gratitude to the exceptional nurses and support staff of the MUHC blocks B8 and B10. Thank you also to Dr Roper, our family doctor, for his care and guidance; to Dr Maari, nurse Sherrie Blackmore and the nurses of the CLSC Métro for their compassion and tireless care.
At Douglas’s request there will be no service. Donations in his name may be made to the Cedars Cancer Foundation of the MUHC.
