It has been a little over a year since we bid farewell to our dear colleague and friend, Fassil. As we continue our work here at the John Molson School of Business, his memory and the impact he had on us remain ever-present.

The void left by Fassil's passing is felt deeply by all of us who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him. His dedication and contributions to our institution were not only professional but also deeply personal. Fassil's unwavering patience, humility, and kindness have left an indelible mark on us all. His gentle demeanor and approachable nature made him a respected figure among students, colleagues, friends, and family alike.

Reflecting upon our time spent working side by side with Fassil, I am reminded of the invaluable lessons he imparted to me. He was not just a colleague but also a mentor who guided me in learning the importance of patience, humility, and doing our jobs with diligence and integrity. Fassil's commitment to excellence was an inspiration, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have learned from him.

As we honor Fassil's memory, let us remember the positive influence he had on our lives and the lives of others. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the lessons he shared.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dr. Fassil was such an extraordinary individual who helped fellow Ethiopian who went through process of immigration. He also served as a guarantor for several in the process of getting Canadian passports. My situation is special since I have a direct connection of the field of statistics, Dr. Fassil’s profession. I remember my early days at McGill where I frequently visited his office with statistical questions and seeking general advice in this field. He was always happy to see me and answer my questions and he gave me books which facilitated my graduate studies. I had also opportunities to witness his gentle manner and down-to-earth interactions with his students.

I have known Dr. Fassil Nebebe since 1963 (58 years ago) when we were students at Haile Selassie I Secondary School, currently Metropolitan University. He was then in Grade 9 as classmate to my younger brother and I was in Grade 10. During my three years of stay in the school, I understood from my brother that he was an outstanding student. As a student, he was very calm and focused. Then in 1970, when I returned to the then Haile Selassie I University, now Addis Ababa University, Fassil was a third year student in the Department of Statistics. He was the same outstanding student, who proved it to be so by becoming a staff member after graduation. During this time, I used to greet him and sometimes we used to talk; he was very kind, humble and friendly. After many years, in 1987 when I was in Canada for my postgraduate study, we met again. He had obtained his PhD. He gave me a drive, with full accommodation, to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA to attend our friend’s (Dr. Abebayehu) wedding. During the journey, I came to know Dr. Fassil more, and learned that he was very humble, kind, friendly and a very generous human being. He did not talk much, but listened more. I understood him very well as a true human being. He was younger than I was, but I learned so much from him about social values. Later on, I introduced my family to his family and stayed at their place for a few days. This time, I came to know his family and his dear wife Zufan who is the same as Dr. Fassil with her nice personality and for being a true human being. His loss is not only for the academic world, but to human society as well. I cannot imagine how his loss must feel to his family and people who know Dr. Fassil closely. 
I pray to God to console Zufan and all their dears during this mourning time.

I have such fond childhood memories of Gash Fassil. His gentle soul and jovial spirit left a lasting impression on all who interacted with him. I am shocked to learn the death of my friend D. Fassil Nebebe. We were friends for last 36 years. We travelled together to Vietnam, China, and Jerusalem. We shuffled together(Concordia's event) with Dr. Dennis Kira for many years. When he was Chair of our Dept. I coordinated two large courses at the same time for three years on his request. Nobody has ever coordinated two together but I could not refuse Fassil because he was a wonderful friend and that too without any compensation.  Few years back he requested me to establish a lecture series in our department which I did. It is a great loss to me as well as the department. I sincerely pray to almighty GOD to give peace to his soul.

Very shocking hearing such a calamitous news! I couldn’t forget the first moment of time meeting Dr. Fasil at  the Apple store in downtown Montreal where I was about to start graduate school back in 2014. He realized my sense of missing Ethiopian community where he gave me his contact, introduced me very wonderful community in Montreal. 
His decent, wise personality are still in my mind. His generous advise are still with me! 
Zufi … , I have no words for this unexplained tragedy…but I only say May God give you & the family the strength, wisdom to coupe up this grief !  He has dedicated his life to educate people, contributed his part in making a better world!

I am deeply shocked and devastated by the sudden death of my best friend and indeed my brother prof. Fassil Nebebe. He was a man of principle, integrity  and committment. The good times we had together and the many trips we took together will never pass through my memory. our frienship both in bad and good times has always been of value. The Montreal  Ethiopian community has lost a great man and Ethiopia has lost a great scholar which is painful.
I wish the whole family to be strong in this sad time and pray to almighty God to rest his soul in peace.

I had the pleasure and privilege of working and sitting on committees with Dr. Nebebe for a while at Concordia.  He had great insights on teaching approaches and classroom implementation of technology, to name a few examples. I am.one of those  who was lucky to have Professor Fassil as a teacher, a colleague, a mentor and as a friend.  His push to challenge his students to go beyond the basics in his economerics class even when the moment was tough for both teachers and students has earned him respect.  I was one of those students who admired his intelect enjoyed his teaching at the Addis Ababa University.  I  have personally lost a great teacher, mentor,  colleague and a friend in Gashe Fassil.   
I hope his family gets comfort knowing that many like me are deeply saddened by his passing.

In-Memoriam: Professor Fossil Nebebe
     An unsung hero, a great Ethiopian, Professor Fassil Nebebe, suddenly passed away in Montreal, Canada on August 23, 2022. As citizens of Ethiopia by far control,  Dr. Fassil and I started to teach at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada at the same time, in 1986: he in Statistics and I in Political Science. Because of his gregarious nature, it did not take me time to befriend him. He immediately became a trusted comrade, a brother in spirit, and a trustworthy advisor when I needed him. 
     Dr. Fassil always did what he said he would do. He would stand up for you In your presence or without. All the time I knew him, Dr. Fassil was a friend who had impeccable integrity. He was a friend I could trust, rain or shine. He was loyal to me through and through. He was trustworthy and dependable. I could meet Dr. Fassil and discuss matters with him as my true self.
     Dr. Fassil was never insipid. He knew himself and behaved and spoke in ways that were consistent. He was totally transparent. He was honest and spoke from the heart with good intentions. He told one what one needs to hear in a way that was frank rather than being nebulous, thus allowing for gossip to build in the background. Precisely due to that, people like me who knew him well for a long time had no problem believing in his utterances and demeanor.
    Dr. Fassil had unlimited empathy for others even when he did not know their core values and did his best to understand what they were feeling and reacted accordingly. He was non-judgmental. He was respectful to even people whom others believe do not deserve it. 
Dr. Fassil was loyal and stayed with you no matter the circumstances. He would listen to your side of the story and defend you when you deserve it. He had strong moral principles, and knowing that as humans, people cannot always be perfect, he was flexible and accepted people’s frailties with magnanimity and compassion. 
May God bless Dr. Fossil’s soul .

Professor Fassil was a dear friend, an admirable colleague and an esteemed teacher. The last time we communicated was on June 8, 2022, when we discussed via email my trip to Montreal to work on a collaborative project.  The meeting never happened and he was a no show at JSM at the beginning of this month.  For many of us,  one of the highlights of the annual gathering  of statisticians at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM)  was the chance to see him in person and spend precious moments discussing sundry issues that range from recent developments in our profession to the sad situation back home.  Although we are now deprived of that priceless joy interacting with him, we will cherish for ever the great times we had together, his measured and wise words and, above all, his infectious smile. May he  Rest In Peace.

I had the pleasure of working as one of Dr. Nebebe's teaching assistants for 2+ years, and he was the best supervisor you could ask for: calm, patient, and supportive. He gave you confidence when you doubted yourself, always pushing you to go the extra mile in pursuit of your goals; and with his encouragement, you truly felt like they were within reach. I am grateful to have known such an inspiring role model.

My deepest and most sincere condolences.  I worked at the JMSB for many years until 2018.  I remember Fassil as a very gentle and kind-hearted person, a mentor and a wonderful professor.  He will be greatly missed.  

Fassil was a great friend; we wrote papers together, collaborated on statistics courses between ours and his department, attended conferences together; shared quality time drinking tea. I will greatly miss him. Pray for his soul to rest in peace and sincere condolences to the family.

It’s a great loss to our community. Professor Fasil was an icon of our community and known by his humble and serene behavior which brought to him a great respect. We lost an intelligent, respectful and dedicated personality.

Dr. Fasil was my hero and is still my hero. I know he is still with us with the same grace he was born with. His loveable personality added to his great contribution to society makes him a precious gift to all of us from God.  As a very close family member and as a sister it is hard for me to imagine a world without my brother Dr. Fasil.  I would miss his presence on that special sofa he sits on whenever we go to his house for gatherings and visits.  His charm brightened by his beautiful smile lights up the room. But I know he will continue to do so in the peaceful world he travelled to while he is still with us in our hearts. We love you  Dr. Fasil  and you have a very special place in our hearts♥️.

I remember the times during the holiday season, every year, when we would celebrate the New Years together as a family. I remember when Dr. Fasil would sit at his chair in that corner that was right beside the small television. I would be the one listening to the discussions he would take part in with my father, Zufan (his wife), and the rest of the group. They would all be discussing interesting topics that mostly appealed to the adults, which were about politics, the state of Ethiopia and Ethiopian music. Something that shined on Dr. Fasil compared to the rest, was the grace and confidence that he would put in when speaking. He was an individual that was always happy when being with the family. As him being my God father, he would always say how much I’ve grown every time I would see him either at the New Years celebrations or at Mehaber gatherings. Not to mention, the moments we had together at the dining table at their house during New Years. He would always be the one to stay calm during times of pressure, and he would always have a graceful attitude that no one else can have.

Now, he’s no more with us. One thing is for sure, we are all very happy that he has lived a very fulfilling life as a father, leader, husband, educator and brother. I know also, that he would want us to continue living our lives becoming who we want to become. 

May you Rest In Peace, God father. May your memories be blessings.

It is with a heavy heart that I offer you my most sincere condolences on the loss of a great human being. 
Such a beautiful tribute, for such a kind and humble man. He was everything you said he was and more. Having worked with him side by side for over 12 years, I not only got to know him has a wonderful administrator, but has a wonderful, kind person. We were a wonderful team together,we did not need words to communicate, we read each other’s mind. He always thought me to be patience, to think before I open my mouth..because I can become vocal on certain issues, and to always have each other’s back, and that was a given…My last conversation with you Fassil was Thursday…see you in September we said.. A humble,kind-hearted, dependable friend and colleague like Fassil doesn’t come along very often, I will miss you immensely💔🙏💔RIP
