Daughter of William Rogers and Hazel (Woods) Dean. Beloved wife of the late Frank Lowe. Cherished mother of Patricia.
Hazel was a journalist and travel writer who began her long career in Toronto with the Canadian Press, quickly moving on to its New York bureau, where she was the first woman copy editor. It was there she met colleague and best friend for 32 years, Frank. Hazel and Frank were married in Toronto in 1945 but moved to Montreal to pursue their careers. Taking time off to raise here daughter, Hazel returned to the working world in the 1960s, first in public relations at Air Canada and then as founding editor of the Montreal Star's Montreal Scene Magazine. Hazel later became the Star's travel editor and when that paper closed, she joined the Montreal Gazette before becoming the travel editor for the Southam News newspaper chain. Even after retirement, she kept up a weekly travel column for several years. But increasingly, she devoted her time to volunteer work, particularly the Montreal West Meals on Wheels service and the Montreal West Public Library. Always an avid bridge player who loved throwing weekly bridge-dos, Hazel also took up craft work and love painting, a favorite pastime in later years.
Grateful thanks to the ladies of We Care, especially Carol Lewis for her compassion, and to the caregivers of the CLSC Benny, particularly Suzanne, Julie Mendelsohn, Esther Bolofer and Michael McLeod, who made her last year at home as comfortable as possible.
Sadly mourned by daughter Patricia, special friend and cousin, Dorothy Brophy, cousin Jane Lowry, nephew John Roby as well as nephews and nieces, cousins and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at St. Phillip's Anglican Church in Montreal West on April 28th at 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment of the ashes at a later date in Toronto.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hazel's memory to the Montreal West Public Library or Montreal West Meals on Wheels.
