Katharina Ribicki (née Straka)

17 septembre 193118 octobre 2021

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Katharina (Kathe) Ribicki (nee Straka) on October 18th in Charlevoix at the age of 90 as she was enjoying the wonderful fresh air, colourful fall leaves and breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River during a peaceful walk in nature. Kathe loved going for walks – it was a cherished daily ritual that made her happy and kept her so healthy throughout her lifetime.

Beloved wife of the late Heinrich Ribicki and cherished mother of Richard (late Brigitte) and Michael (Natalie). Kathe is survived by her sister, Traudl (Helmut), and her brother, Ernst (Helga), and many nieces, nephews, and other family members in Europe. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Hans and Joseph, and her grandson, Aidan.

Kathe has lived, worked, and volunteered in Westmount for over 40 years and will be dearly missed by her many, many friends in the community. Kathe was a ray of sunshine to everyone she knew or met on the street. She always greeted everyone with a warm smile on her face and a good word that would inevitably brighten their day.

Kathe was always so thankful for all the friendships she had made throughout the years with neighbours, fellow gardeners from the Westmount Community Garden, members of the Westmount Contactivity Centre, fellow bridge players, exercise class members, meditation class members, art class members, former customers, and, of course, her many, many walking companions.

The family will receive condolences on October 30th between 1PM and 2PM immediately followed by a service in the chapel of the Collins Clarke Funeral Home at 5610 Sherbrooke St. W.

Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions, there will be no reception following the funeral service; however, attendees are welcome to remain after the service to share their memories of Kathe.

For those unable to attend in person, the funeral service will be streamed online at (https://funeraweb.tv).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Kate. We were friends from the community garden for years. She seemed to be there so often when I was there…often just the two or three of us. We loved talking about our gardens. I would see her at Contactivity too. Kate for years looked after my garden when I would go away in the summer for a week. She will be missed by so many.
My sincere condolences to her family.

I met Kate at Contactivity about 10 years ago. We quickly became friends. Even though I stopped playing Bridge, we kept in touch all the time. We took long walks and I will miss her a lot.
RIP Kate. God bless the family.

Sincere condolences to Kate's beloved family. She brought light and laughter to so many people at Contactivity and, in fact, everywhere she went. I literally do not recall a single instance where I ever saw Kate without a smile on her face. Such an open-hearted and pure soul graced us with her presence for so many years, as will her memory now.

My sincere condolences to Kate's family and friends. She will be missed as a presence in the Hillside Community Garden, where I first met her, and where I shall remember her, tending the beans and tomatoes. Her garden always thrived, and she was so generous sharing her knowledge and expertise. May she rest in peace.

I offer my condolences to Kate's family and many friends. I met Kate at the community gardens several years ago and considered her a friend. I was always happy to be at the gardens at the same time as her. She was easy to be around. More energy than probably any other gardener and always happy to help. The photo that I have included was taken a few days before Kate turned 90. She and I were digging out weeds from the pathways that afternoon!

Over the past year, we walked together a few times when that was one of the only outings possible due to Covid. During the walks, she told me about her childhood in Czechoslovakia during the war. It was an education for me to hear her stories. Over the years she had also shared with me other challenges that she had faced during her lifetime. You never know what someone has experienced in life, so always be kind!

Kate also talked about happy times at her cottage in years past and travels with family more recently. She spoke lovingly of her family. She will be missed.

To Kate's family My condolences to all of you on the loss of your beloved Mother.
Your mom was a very special lady. When I first started my garden in Westmount, your mother shared knowledge and cuttings to help me begin. For the Contactivity bazaar she baked super lemon cakes and warned me they sold out fast. So I made sure to shop early. I had tasted her delicious baking. And she prepared the most delicious hot dogs for lunch at the bazaar. For a time I played SkipBo with your mom and two other ladies. Kate served her delicious baked goods and on the rare occasions I brought something I made it somehow did not stand up to her values. She was right though my baking was not nearly as good.. Your mom was a kind, caring and giving person. I hope the beautiful memories you have of her and with her help you through this very difficult time. RIP
