In Loving Memory of Larry Lau
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Larry Lau, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He passed away peacefully February 22, 2025 in Montreal, Quebec surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in 1949 in Guangdong, China, Larry was a man of remarkable intelligence and determination. He moved to Hong Kong at the age of 11 and his academic achievements granted him opportunities to study abroad, ultimately allowing him to earn a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Calgary. His hard work and perseverance led him to a successful career as an engineer with Mannville Oil & Gas, but his ambition, resilience, and adventurous spirit drove him and his beloved wife, Florence, to embark on an entrepreneurial journey. Together, they built and managed several successful businesses.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry had a deep love for the simple joys in life. He found happiness in the outdoors, whether camping under the stars, skiing down snowy slopes, or riding his tractor with a contented smile. A true engineer, he was often found tinkering around the house and garage. He was a Calgary Flames fan and enjoyed watching hockey with his family into his final days. Music, whether from the repetitions of piano practice or the Beatles over his Hi-Fi system, was a continued source of delight, even long after he lost his words. He also had a special place in his heart for dogs, who were his faithful companions over the years.
Above all, family was at the core of his life. He is survived by his wife Florence, his children Garrick (Renée), Cara (Nicolas), Garnet (Edward), and his grandchildren: Jaxon, Evan, Sophia, Dominic, Éric, Evelyn, Estée, and Elliott. His grandchildren brought endless joy to his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Their laughter, energy, and love always brought a smile to his face. He also leaves behind his mother Chiu Ying and siblings Hoi-Ming, Hoi-Keung, and Karen. He was preceded in death by his father Chun Yue and brother Hoi-Kiu.
Larry leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love, and unwavering dedication to his family. His gentle nature will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of his life will be held on March 15, 2025 at Centre funéraire Côte-des-Neiges (4525 Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal, QC H3V 1E7). Visitation begins at 10AM and Catholic Service is at 1PM. Interment will follow at Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery. Consolation banquet will be shared afterwards.
Instead of sending flowers and gifts, we kindly invite you to contribute to the Larry Hoi-Kun Lau Honour Memorial Fund established at St. Mary's Hospital Foundation. Your donations will help ensure that the hospital can continue its invaluable work and touch the lives of many others as it has touched ours. To inspire support, Larry’s children will match the first $500 in donations to earn Larry a plaque on St. Mary's Memorial Wall, a lasting tribute to his memory.
