It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Maggy Akerblom on May 25, 2023.
Born in 1940 in Opladen, Germany, and having studied Journalism at the Freie Universität Berlin, she immigrated to Canada in 1966 and from then on called Montréal her home. For many years she was a beloved and award-wining producer-announcer at Radio Canada International, the German Voice of Canada to the World. For over 50 years she also played a crucial part in the now-defunct Deutsches Theater Montreal, where she played leading roles in many of their stage productions. Upon her retirement from RCI she contributed to the Kanada Kourier, as well as volunteering at various charitable organisations. Maggy was also an active committee member of the German Society of Montreal.
She will be sadly missed (but never forgotten) by her daughter Daniela, son Oliver (Caroline Dubé), granddaughter Céleste, her “little cousin” Karl-Heinz Legler, her long time companion John O’Hara as well as remaining cousins Gert and Renate & their families in Germany and numerous friends around the world.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Dignité on Côte-des-Neiges on Sunday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the McGill Center for Studies on Aging, the Alzheimer’s Society of Montreal, or the Jewish General Hospital who were so very caring and attentive in her final days.
