Margaret (Gretl) Laurin passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in Austria, she moved to Montréal at the age of 24 and worked as an administrative assistant, rental manager, and medical secretary. Beloved for her warm personality and strong sense of duty, Gretl also volunteered many hours at the Montréal General Hospital.
A lifelong learner and avid reader, Gretl stayed informed on world affairs and enjoyed thoughtful, lively discussions with her many friends. She was married to Cyrille Laurin for 49 years and created a warm, welcoming home decorated with fresh-cut peonies and music always playing. Gretl enjoyed swimming, tennis, walks on Mount Royal, the intellectual challenge of bridge, and quality time with her family. Music was her passion—especially classical—but she embraced many genres, ranging from Austrian folk songs to modern hits.
Gretl was part of many social circles, loved connecting with others, and was an active member of the Austrian community in Montréal. She brought people together with her warmth and attentiveness as a devoted friend who never missed a birthday and always lent an ear.
Above all, Gretl loved her family: Christina Laurin, André Laurin (deceased 2024), Silvia Setton, as well as their families, Brian Keliher, Emily Keliher, Tokiko Toguri, Maxime Toguri-Laurin, Alexa Toguri-Laurin, Xara Toguri-Laurin. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A private family remembrance will be held in her honor.
