Mary Ann Elizabeth (MAE) Martineau, née Duberry, passed away peacefully on Sabbath, December 27, 2025, at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Mary was born on the beautiful island of Montserrat, known as “the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean,” to James and Margaret Duberry. She was the second child and first girl of thirteen children.
From a young age, Mary was engaged in church life and its auxiliary programs. She was very active in Sabbath School and MV (Missionary Volunteers) at Bethel Plymouth Seventh-day Adventist Church, and she progressed through the ranks of the Pathfinder program until she became a Master Guide.
Mary began her schooling at St. Mary’s Anglican School. When the Seventh-day Adventist School opened, her parents enrolled her at Bethel Seventh-day Adventist School where she completed both her primary and secondary education.
After Secondary School, Mary worked in service for the Howe’s family. She later worked in the medical office of Doctor Jones, assisting with paperwork. When she migrated to England, she worked in a factory for a year before starting her nursing program at the London School of Nursing. Upon completion of the program, Mary worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in both England and Canada until she retired.
While in England, Mary fell in love and married Charles Martineau on March 30, 1959, at the Carter Knowle Road Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sheffield, England.
Their union produced three wonderful children—Judith, Elizabeth, and Brian.
In 1971 Mary and Charles Martineau moved their family from England to Montreal, Quebec. In Montreal, they attended the Westmount Seventh-day Adventist Church. As a member of the church, Mary Martineau served faithfully in various capacities. She used her creativity in the children’s Sabbath School department, taught an adult Sabbath School class, and worked as a deaconess. Whatever task Mary was asked to do, she carried out with diligence, excellence, and a willing spirit.
Mary was a loving, caring, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She endeavored to honor and please God in all that she did. She is survived by her three children, Judith White, née Marineau, Elizabeth Martineau-Marshall, and Brian Martineau; two sons-in-law, Conrad White and George Marshall; one daughter-in-law, Cynthia Sibanda-Martineau; five grandchildren, Jeffrey White, Amanda White, Chanelle-Lize Marshall, Jeremiah Martineau, and Lailah Martineau; three sisters, Florence Lynch, Iris Duberry, and Audrey Irish; three brothers, Clarence Duberry, Rupert Duberry, and Franklyn Duberry; and a host of nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Margaret and James Duberry; her husband, Charles Martineau; two brothers, Henry Greenaway and Joe Duberry; and three sisters, Alice Williams, Edith Deazle, and Viola Woods.
May our memories of Mary comfort us until we meet again. Sleep on! We will see you in the morning!
