Meng Young Kuo, beloved husband of the late Sa Chen Wu, cherished father of Johnson, Joannie, and Jimmy Kuo, and proud grandfather of Madelyn Kuo, passed away peacefully at the Montreal Chinese Hospital on July 29, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born on February 19, 1930, in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, Mr. Kuo was the eldest of four siblings. He spent his early years in Beijing, attended high school in Hunan, and pursued university studies in Taiwan, where his father was a chemistry professor at the same school. He later continued his education in the United States before moving to Canada, where he earned a Master’s degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Alberta.
Mr. Kuo began his professional life teaching students from grades 8 to 12 at a high school in Saskatchewan, all while continuing to earn certifications in various subjects. During this time, he exchanged letters with a woman in Taiwan – introduced to him by a mutual acquaintance – who would later become his wife. He eventually returned to Taiwan to marry her, and together they moved back to Saskatchewan. The couple later settled in Montreal, where they raised their family. Mr. Kuo worked as an airplane turbine engine technician at Pratt & Whitney until his retirement.
A lifelong lover of the arts, Meng Young was especially fond of Peking opera – having performed as a child – and had a deep admiration for visual art. However, his greatest passion was tigers. Fascinated by their beauty, he filled entire binders and sketchbooks with tiger sketches, eventually earning the nickname “Tiger” or “Tiger Kuo.” He also studied Chinese painting and gained recognition in various art contests. One summer, he even taught Chinese painting at Dawson College. Outside of the arts, he enjoyed woodworking, handiwork, and had a talent for upcycling well before it became popular.
In his later years, while living at the Montreal Chinese Hospital – the nursing home where he lived for 9 years, – he was cared for with great compassion. The staff were charmed by his warm smile and sense of humor, and many came to love him as if he were their own father. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, playful sense of humour, and open-minded nature. He had a gift for making others laugh and a charm that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His warm spirit will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
