It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael (Mick) Stuart, 98, in Montreal on February 2nd 2025 surrounded by his family and following a brief illness.
He was predeceased in 1993 by his beloved wife of 37 years, and mother of his children, Margueritte (Gogotte) Lacroix.
He is survived and will be sadly missed by his wife of 19 years Madeleine Barrette, by his daughter Louise and her husband Brendan, his son Edmund and his wife Sheila, his grandchildren Michael (Jessica), Anne-Marie (Mike), Timothy, Meghan (John) and Nikki (Bela) as well as his great-grandchildren Eamon and Calum. He is also survived by his nieces Rev. Annemarie Stuart (Isabelle) and Tessa O’Brien (Donogh) and will be fondly remembered by many friends and acquaintances around the world.
Mick was born in London, England in 1927, the youngest of four siblings. He graduated as a Mining Engineer from Imperial College, London’s Royal School of Mines in 1950 and began a successful career in the resource industry where he became well known and respected. Over his 40-year career he held operational and senior executive positions with a number of international companies principally in Canada and Ireland. With the unfailing support of Gogotte, Mick’s work provided the opportunity for the family to live in many diverse communities including approximately 10 years in northern Ontario and Quebec, 15 years in Ireland in Limerick and then Dublin, 10 years in Toronto and finally retiring to Montreal in 1990. During his retirement he devoted much of his time to working with various Montreal hospitals as a volunteer for cancer patients.
Mick was a devout Catholic, a man of principle and conducted himself with great dignity and integrity throughout his life. He had love and a deep devotion to Gogotte and Madeleine and was always there with love, support and good counsel for his family. He was kind and thoughtful with his friends and had a tremendous sense of loyalty and responsibility to his work. He was known to all as a true gentleman.
We will miss Mick but we are comforted in the knowledge that his legacy lives on through the values he instilled in all who knew him.
A mass for Mick will be held at Corpus Christi Church, 16 Lockwood Rd., Toronto, on Saturday, Feb 8th at 5:00pm.
Visitation and a funeral service will be held at Centre Funénaire Cote-des-Neige, 4525 Chem. de la Cote-des-Neige, Montreal, on Wednesday, Feb 12th starting at 11:30am.
