I once enrolled in a French class on Milton Park. I didn't learn much French, but I met Robert and it was the start of our friendship.
During my Montréal years his presence was precious to me. Since I got back to Italy his emails would spark joy into my days.

His kindness, sensibility and understanding will always be with me.

I met Bob at Norman and Monika's wedding anniversary a few years ago and I found him incredibly charming. I wasn't surprised by that because over the years my dear friend Monika has told me so many loving stories about Bob and Marion that I felt I knew him before I even met him. 

Monika and her family had such a strong bond with Bob.  They visited Montréal frequently where I'm sure her meticulous food prep was appreciated and where Norman's expert tech support kept the computer connections working. I was so impressed that in his 90's Bob was still able to do regular online get togethers with them - over a glass of scotch.  Happy memories.

My heart goes out to Norman, Monika and Julian.

It was a wonderful gift of life to be able to meet Robert and share wonderful conversations and friendship with him. His jovial spirit, his love and generosity are an example that we keep in our hearts. Hugs and condolences from the friends from Buenos Aires, Selva, Luz and Mariano.

Hi to everyone in the Verrall family. 
I’m so sorry for your loss. ‘Mr. Verrall ’, as I knew him, played a big part in my artistic development. When I was a teenager, Tam and I watched a lot of Film Board animated shorts at her house, sometimes in the company of other Film Board illuminati such as Greta and Gerald. This made a lasting impression on me. I’ve used animated films in many of my classes over the years. And now my grandchildren are big fans of NFB animation! (Among their favourites: ‘Neighbours’,  ‘What on Earth ‘, and ‘The Great Toy Robbery’.)
I always felt welcome at ‘the Verralls’, and am so grateful that I got to know a wonderful man and an important supporter of artistic talent.

I write to celebrate Robert Verrall, who along with his wife Marion, were a major breath of fresh air in my life when I was a teenager. Soon after I met their eldest son David, he introduced me to his extended family that was built around a rumble tumble collection of kids. I felt at home in a way I rarely had ever before. For the first time in my life, I met unconventional people of all stripes and immediately recognized “my people”. That thinking outside the box and societal norms had an enormous liberating influence on me, and I appreciate and thank Robert and Marion for the warmth with which they embraced me and included me in their world.

Dear Verrall family,
I have so many fond memories of Bob; his kindness, his interest, his enthusiasm.  His constant, positive support  was so appreciated and something I hold dear.  I am so grateful to have worked with him and to have called him friend.
I am sorry I won't be in Montreal for the service on Feb 8th.  I know you will send him off well.

I owe a great debt of gratitude to Bob. Back in the early eighties he took a chance on me and gave me my first job as a dramatic scriptwriter. The film we did, A Right to Refuse, won an award and springboarded me on a long career as a film and television scriptwriter. 

I still remember my first meeting with Bob at the NFB. He had read a number of my short stories and was aware of my previous experience in film editing. We had a great talk, and then he said, “I want to hire you to write a short drama.” I wrote it, Wolf Koenig shot it and a career was launched. 

Bob was a real visionary at the NFB during those years. He got the drama studio hopping, producing great features and TV series. The place was an incubator of real talent and creative energy. You could just feel the spirit in the corridors of the NFB. Bob was trying to create something powerful and meaningful and until the powers at be shut down all that good work, he was turning the Board into something special, producing award winning dramas that were a credit to the whole country. 

Bob was a real gentleman, really soft spoken, but also someone who could fight for what worked and was right. 

My deepest condolences to his family. I remember him well.

My deepest heart-felt condolences to the entire Verral family.
I met Robert and his late wife through Michael and Caroline many years ago and saw them both in town and on their farm, various other places including my home.  I shall always cherish his warmth and sharp whit, standing up for what is right, a real trail-blazer. While I shall miss him, I am so grateful for having known him.
