Robert was born on April 25, 1936 in Debrecen, Hungary to Kalman Hirsch and Jolan Weisz. A Holocaust survivor, Robert immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1956, and earned a Chartered Accountant’s degree (CA) from George Williams University. Following a twenty-five-year career working for Revenue Canada, Robert taught himself derivatives markets, and became an accomplished options trader. Throughout, he was an exceptional competitive bridge player, and brilliant chess tactician. He will, however, be remembered most for his total devotion to his wife, kids and grandchildren. His kindness and generosity towards his friends, his ability to stand up-to injustice of all kinds, and his never-ending support for the underdog were unparalleled.
He is survived by Rose, his beloved wife of 60 years, his cherished sons Andrew (Chantal), Kenneth (Persefoni), and Derek (Naomi), his treasured grandchildren William (Rory), Michaela, Emilie, Gabriel, Katerina, James, Julian, Kaiden, Hadley, Henley and Hunter, his nephews Kevin, Patrick and Eric, and his niece Pauline. He was preceded in death by his brother George, his sister Ethel, his sisters-in-law Irene and Hélène, and his brother-in-law Joseph.
A funeral service will be held at Centre Funéraire Côte-des Neiges, Montréal, Québec, H3V 1E7, Oct 4, 2025 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Visitation 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Memorial 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.
