Born in the Bronx, New York, Peggy was one of seven children born to Alfred and Margaret (Rafferty) Lagan. She earned her undergraduate degree from Good Counsel College, matriculating to Hunter College where she earned her Master’s in education. She married Patrick Hughes in 1962; together they had four children: Peter (Ellen), Paul (Christine), Mary Clare Roeder (Marty), and Aileen Memoli (Matthew). She was predeceased by her husband in 1985, as well as her brothers Al, Jack, and Robert. She is survived by her children, grandchildren (Patrick, David, James, Isabella, Cara, Maggie, and Ella) as well as her sisters Sr. Anne Marie Lagan S.C., Maureen Lagan, Eileen Curran, sisters-in-law Joan Lagan and June Lagan, nieces, nephews, and many treasured friends.

Equally devoted to her faith and Irish heritage, she was proud to profess both. Peggy lived her Roman Catholicism as a daily communicant and Eucharistic Minister serving both her parish and a local Veterans Hospital. She was actively involved as the Catholic Action Officer for the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians (District 18 Peekskill). As a Catholic educator she was dedicated to academic excellence in her students as well as being keenly aware of her role in assisting in their faith formation. She encouraged all her students (children and grandchildren) to live a life of service.

Peggy loved her family, reading, and spending time with her friends. Generous, fun, and loyal, she will be greatly missed.

There are simply no words to express the depth of love our entire family has for Mrs. Hughes. She was a wonderful woman who impacted all of our lives in such an immeasurably meaningful way. To Mom and Dad she was Peggy. To my Brothers and Sister she will always be Mrs. Hughes. She will be dearly missed.

Peggy's devotion to her faith and her love of Irish heritage will be remembered by her fellow members of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians in Peekskill. Peggy was thoughtful and always ready to help with anything. We will miss her friendship, humor and smile. Rest in Peace Peggy. Love, your sisters in Division 17, Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians

Peggy and I were classmates at Good Counsel College and shared so many wonderful and fun-filled times. She was a great friend and always ready with a quick wit and so much fun to be with. Her smile and laughter are my favorite memories of Peggy.

There are just too many memories I have of Mrs.Hughes (along with my mother, Jeanne McMahon; and Mrs. Daly). They epitomized the meaning of friendship. The on-going laughter they shared is a precious memory. It was an honor and pleasure to have someone as wonderful as Mrs.Hughes in my life.

My condolences to her beautiful family and may she find peace in Heaven with her wonderful husband.

So sorry for the news about Peggy. She was a big part of our family- always there for happy and sad times. We had a great time in Ireland together visiting the Hearty family. She is now with Pat now and celebrating her birthday with him- what a time that must have been. Thank you Peggy for always being there. She will surely be missed.❤️Kathleen McKenna Daily
