On Thursday, February 13, 1936, Edgar Leon Jones was born to Gaylord and Johnnie V. Jones in Luther, Oklahoma. He was their only child. Edgar attended Frederick Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, where he proudly graduated on June 1, 1956. On October 1, 1956, just one day after the Korean War ended, Edgar enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
During Edgar’s service, he was stationed at a master jet base in El Toro, California, called Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. Edgar attained the rank of Corporal (E-4), serving as an aircraft mechanic specializing in intermediate avionics maintenance. While enlisted, Edgar met and married the love of his life, Bobbie J. Jones. In 1958, he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in recognition of his faithful and disciplined service.
Following his military service, Edgar and Bobbie J. Jones was blessed with three children: Rodney, Edgar Jr., and Yvette. Later in life, they lovingly adopted Johnathan. Edgar dedicated his professional life to public service. He worked for the City of Los Angeles Department of General Services as a senior customer services attendant for 26 years. He later spent 17 years working for the Los Angeles Unified School District as a building and grounds worker, where he was known for his strong work ethic and dependability.
Edgar had a deep love for sports, especially basketball and football. He was a die-hard Los Angeles Lakers fan, and he faithfully followed the Raiders and the Chargers. Sundays were often spent watching his teams compete, something he truly enjoyed. Edgar embraced life with passion and joy. He loved spending time with his family, sharing his wisdom and experiences. Edgar had a passion for communicating on his CB radio, where he was known by the call sign “Catfish 213”. He connected with people across the United States. Edgar's favorite outdoor activity was fishing, and he especially cherished summer camping trips.
Music was another love of Edgar’s life. He enjoyed dancing and was a devoted fan of James Brown. A man of many talents, he spent countless hours playing his electric and bass guitars, favoring jazz music. Friends would gather at his home on the weekends to play music together, filling the house with rhythm, laughter, and lasting memories.
On January 23, 2026, Edgar Leon Jones Sr. peacefully transitioned from this life at home, surrounded by the love of his family. Edgar was truly a “man’s man”—a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who valued family above all else. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bobbie J. Jones, and his parents Gaylord and Johnnie V. Jones.
Edgar leaves behind a lasting legacy of love and cherished memories.
