Leonard M. Mondragon was born on May 28, 1947, in Greeley, Colorado, to Manuel J. Mondragon and Esther N. Mondragon, who preceded him in death and now rejoice in the presence of our Lord. Raised as a pastor’s kid, Leonard grew up surrounded by faith, love, and service—values that shaped who he was and guided him throughout his life.
Leonard graduated from Barstow Union High School and later attended Vanguard University, then known as Southern California College (SCC), where he studied for two years.
In May of 1969, Leonard answered the call to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served as a sergeant, and his military service reflected the qualities that defined his life: discipline, loyalty, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility toward others.
Leonard’s faith was at the very heart of who he was. He loved God deeply and lived out that faith through a quiet, faithful life of service. He had a true servant’s heart and served in many roles within the churches he attended, including church treasurer, Sunday school superintendent, and usher. He gave his time and energy joyfully, even carpooling and driving church friends to services when they needed a ride. Leonard found great joy in studying the Bible, and his faith showed in the way he lived—with compassion, humility, sincerity, and grace. He was known for his loyalty, caring spirit, gentle way of speaking, lighthearted humor, easygoing conversations, and the wisdom he shared so freely.
Leonard also had a lifelong love of sports, especially baseball and basketball. He enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams—the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Angels—and sharing those moments with family and friends.
Leonard was a devoted son, a loving brother, a deeply cherished uncle, and a caring godfather. Though he never married and had no children of his own, he lovingly embraced his niece and nephew as his own in every way that mattered. To them, he was a constant source of guidance, encouragement, love, and unwavering support. He is survived by his sister, Sarah Quintero (Samuel); his niece, Tabitha Velasco (Al); his nephew, John Quintero (Celeste); and his beloved great-nieces and great-nephew, Jade Lynch (Isaiah L.), Genesis Quintero (great-niece/god-daughter), and Isaiah Velasco.
Leonard is deeply missed. We miss his presence, his words of wisdom, his thoughtful conversations, and the fellowship he shared so generously. His life leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, kindness, and love that will forever live on in our hearts.
He will never be forgotten.
Until we meet again.
