Evelyn Poore Dellinger of Jonas Ridge, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2017. Born December 12, 1933 to Charlie Poore and Evelyn Loven Poore, she grew up in Jonas Ridge with her two brothers, Charles W. Poore, Joseph Loven Poore, and a younger sister that died as an infant. She was married to Paul A. “Pete” Dellinger on July 18, 1957. She graduated from Brevard College, and spent her entire career at Great Lakes Carbon Company in Morganton. She loved her job as Executive Secretary, and was employed by Great Lakes for almost 50 years. She prided herself on always arriving at work very early in the morning, regardless of the snowy road conditions in Jonas Ridge. Having a strong work ethic, she not only worked at Great Lakes, but also had a part-time job for over 50 years as bookkeeper for her cousin’s business, Loven Lumber Company in Pineola, N.C. When her great-nephews were born prematurely and were released from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Evelyn decided to retire from the job she loved at Great Lakes in order to take care of the children while their mother worked.
Evelyn was actively involved in her church, Jonas Ridge United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School and helped with the church Christmas play for many years. As a part of the Church’s Christmas celebration, Evelyn provided presents and candy for the area youth and elderly. She also hosted countless community and family reunions for all branches of her family and friends. She had a generous and giving spirit, and was always willing to help those in need. Although she had no children of her own, Evelyn had six nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own children. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her younger brother Joseph, and her husband, Paul “Pete” Dellinger. Evelyn is survived by her brother, Charles W. Poore and wife, Betty Poore of Jonas Ridge; her sister-in-law Dawn A. Poore of Morganton; her nephews, Charles “Chuck” Poore, David Poore, and Sam Poore; and her nieces, Michaelle Poore Hayes, Susan Poore Hall, and Joelle Poore, and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family would especially thank the Jonas Ridge Rest Home where Evelyn resided recently. They treated her as family and contributed to her long life. Medi-Home Hospice of Newland also visited Evelyn daily for an extended period and were an immense help to all.
Services will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday January 5, 2017 at the Jonas Ridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Anderson officiating. Family will receive friends at 1:00pm prior to the service, in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jonas Ridge United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 44, Jonas Ridge, N.C. 28641. Kirksey Funeral Home is serving the family.
Arrangements under the direction of Kirksey Funeral Home, Morganton, NC.
