I met Jim at a party Marian was hosting in Raleigh many moons ago. Being an introvert, I sometimes need to escape the fun for a wee while.   Jim came into the room I was sitting in and we talked about the music he had in his collection. He introduced me to tango and flamenco musicians.  He had the knowledge to impart the practicalities of life along with a flair for the exotic.  Jim was always a quiet presence and over the years as I got to know him better I found he was the epitome of a humble quiet soul with great spiritual depth and compassion. May his memory be a blessing.

Sincere sympathy to the family during this time.  My favorite memories of Jim are from high school when he played guitar whenever I needed accompaniment - and rehearsals.  He was a gentle loving soul even then, and  I’m glad to know he didn’t change during the rest of his lifetime. Peace. 

Mr. Hartman was my piano teacher about 30 years ago.  He was a great teacher, and when I wanted to really give up he kept me going.  I appreciated that.  I dont play much now but when I do it is because of him.  I will never forget how kind he was.

I moved to West Jefferson in 1972 and took a job at the Phenix Chair plant owned by Thomasville Furniture.  Hartman Music Store was located adjacent to the plant and I dropped in and met Mr. Hartman and his son, Jim. There began a fast friendship. I came from Mt. Airy and had begun playing guitar and singing country songs. Ashe County was a bluegrass heaven and Bob Jones appeared with his mandolin and boundless energy. Somehow we corralled a very capable banjer player by the name of Russell Hanes. We called him "racehorse" for obvious reasons. Jim played bass and was the steadying influence we needed. We played local gigs wherever we could under the name "Ozone Jones and the High Times".  Played out on the mountain at the "Moonshine "N"' several times and Mr. Hartman even got us on his radio program on WKSK.  We couldn't stay together because making a living took precedence.
But our friendship has endured for, lo, these many years. We have lost our brother, Jim, whom we could count on for a steady beat, fast friendship, and a sly sense of humor.  We will always cherish the memory of our brother, Jim.

I came to Waldensian Presbyterian two years ago as music director, and Jim introduced himself to me and offered to continue tuning the church's pianos, which has been a great gift. 
It was one of many ways he served God so faithfully here, and he was so good at it.  Jim listened each week in worship, and whenever he heard a note or two that might be out of tune, he would fix it.  So we're talking consistent tuning, not just twice a year.

Whenever I talked with Jim, his gracious, giving spirit was foremost, and I always appreciated that he looked directly at me when he spoke.

Soon before our Covid shutdown, I have a specific memory of looking up into the sound booth, and Jim and Marian both smiled and waved, as he was recording that day.  I will miss seeing him there and in the office halls on Thursdays when he and Marian came to serve in the Community Assistance Ministry.  

Soon after Jim's cancer diagnosis and just before our Covid shutdown, Jason Adams led a  service of prayer for healing and laying on of hands  in our sanctuary.  I am grateful now that,  in that tangible yet spiritual way, we were able to assure Jim of our prayers and love for him and Marian.  Jim's healing took a different path than we hoped, yet we trust that he is whole and well in the embrace of our Lord.
 
Jim and Marian are beloved in our congregation, and Jim is already sorely missed.  My prayers and deepest sympathy go to Marian and all of their family, whose life here has been changed forever in this loss.

Mr. Hartman was my piano teacher about 30 years ago. I was not a very good student, but he was always kind and patient with me. I played a little piano last night in his memory. My sincere condolences to the family. 

I only had the pleasure of meeting Jim one time but he did make quite a good impression. He did indeed, seem humble and, from my perspective, a loving husband to Marion and a tireless worker for his beloved McKinley Inn. I could see he enjoyed working with his hands and enjoyed the satisfaction of a job well done. I wish God had granted him more time on this earth so we all could enjoy his laughter, his smile. Jim, may you rest in peace and thank you for the opportunity to have known you, even if it was for a short amount of time. My heartfelt prayers for Marion and your family.

Jim was a man of many talents, but what I remember and will miss the most about Jim was his kind and gentle spirit. He was always eager to help around the church in so many ways. He  served as a member of our A/V committee, faithfully taking his turn every six weeks to video our worship services. When he and Marian joined the church, he related to me that he was a piano tuner and offered to keep the many pianos at the church tuned. He would of course accept no money for that service but said it was part of his ministry. I had the pleasure of serving with Jim as a two man team at least year's mission day when he demonstrated his talent as an electrician. I will miss Jim, his generous spirit, and his always genuine smile.

My experience with Jim was one of comforting silence.  He said very little yet said everything with his presence, smile and words of encouragement.  His ability to be present and still while at the same time attending to my every word left me feeling heard and understood.  When he smiled I knew his smile was genuine and from a place of compassion and care.  I truly will miss seeing him as I know all of you will.   A true treasure.  Love you Jim.

So sorry for your loss.  Shared many memories with you, Jim, and Lynn.  My prayers are with you and your family.  

Jim was a friend to myself and my husband Bart.  He expertly tuned my piano and helped Bart on the WPC property committee. He will be missed.

For decades, the Barber clan of NC  enjoyed Jimmy’s gentle friendliness, his guitar and love of music, his family, his unassuming air, all of it so much.     Jimmy was loved and will be very missed!
