Mary Francis Shade

Mary Francis Summers Shade “Susie”, 54, of Glen Alpine, NC, passed away with family by her side at Frye Regional Medical Center on Saturday, October 21, 2017. She was born on Christmas Eve in 1962 to the late Clifton Leroy Summers, Sr. and Bernice Elizabeth Propst Summers.

Mary went to Freedom High School and was a member of Chambers Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She worked as a waitress starting in her teen years and was voted “Morganton’s Best Waitress” while serving at AJ Steakhouse. Mary Became a custodian for Burke County Public Schools in her 30’s, spending 19 years in the school system. She finished her career as head custodian at Oak Hill Elementary School. Mary loved her friends, co-workers and the students at OHES. She was all about the “Bulldogs”. Mary enjoyed all types of singing events, going to church, and she loved family celebrations.

Along with her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Barry Nelson Shade and a brother, Charles Lewis Summers.

Mary is survived by two sons, Chad Landon Summers and Devin Nelson Shade; two brothers, Clifton Leroy Summers, Sr. and Chester Lee Summers and his wife Amber; a sister, Maggie Elizabeth Summers Felder and her husband Malcolm; four nephews, Trey, Quadree, Jacques and Donovan Summers; five nieces, Ciara Felder Derr and her husband Justin, Chelsie Felder, Taylor, Morraja and Nevaeh Summers; great nephews Jamauri Mayfield and Jayce Derr; and a great niece, Amiyah Mejia. Mary was a loving, spoiling and devoted grandmother to Kylie Lynne Summer and Kyra Leah Summers, and Kendall Reese and Kayleigh Michelle Shade. All four were in her care and she made sure they were loved and had the very best she could give them.
