Gaylen passed away peacefully at Arbor Health Hospital in Morton, Washington on March 6, 2024. Gaylen Lyle Aust was born November 18, 1948, in Centralia Washington to Gilbert and Lola Aust. In 1949, they moved to Mossyrock, Washington when Gaylen was a year old. The Dairy Farm became a cornerstone in the family’s lives.
Gaylen served in the United States Army as an Army Artilleryman, in the 25th infantry, 1st Calvary on an 8-inch Houser during the Vietnam War. He returned home from war in February 1971. He was proud of his service and continued to engage with his community at the Mossyrock VFW until his passing. Shortly after his return home, he married Kathy (McCarty) on August 21, 1971, at Richland Valley Church of the Brethren in Mossyrock, Washington.
Gaylen had many passions and hobbies, including woodworking and cutting lumber at the sawmill. He also enjoyed working with horses and riding motorcycles. And do not forget Gaylen always had a good joke up his sleeve. For Kathy and Gaylen’s honeymoon, they rode his brand new Honda 750 to Shawny, Oklahoma. As they got older and began to have free time, they enjoyed traveling. One of the greatest joys in his life was being a family man spending countless hours with his beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Gaylen was a fireman at Mossyrock, Washington for a period of time prior to his health declining. He set his mind to donating five acres of land to the Lewis County Fire District 3, and now that is where the fire department sits.
Gaylen will join his parents, Gilbert and Lola, along with his brother, Kurt Aust in Heaven.
He leaves behind his wife of almost 53 years, Kathy, and their three children, Melissa Aust, Carlena Ashley, and Gaylen R. Aust, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings Anabelle Hornby, Jeane Broshears, Greg Aust, Vaughn Aust, Lisa Galloway, and Melanie Clowe.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brown Mortuary.
A a celebration of life for Gaylen will be held Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 12:00 PM at The Aust Dairy Farm, 126 Ajlune Rd, Mossyrock, WA 98564.
