Nécrologie de Robert O. Daugherty
Robert O. “Uncle Bob” Daugherty, 96, Muncie, Indiana passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at his residence at Morrison Woods Health Campus, where he had resided for the past two years. Bob was born in Clinton, Indiana, to James Russell Daugherty and Golden McGuire on Friday, July 28, 1922. At a young age, Bob’s father was transferred from Clinton to Muncie, Indiana, with Standard Oil Company. Bob was fourteen years old when his dad passed away, and in his own words “Became a man that day”, working after school to help support his mother and younger brother, seven year old Eldon. Not long after graduating from Burris High School, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served proudly during WWII with the 3rd signal Battalion, and fought in Okinawa and Korea. Returning home, he started his own auto repair garage business and in 1950, married the love of his life, Louise “Lou” Rose Beladino. Together they built their first home in the Yorktown area, moving in on Christmas Day in 1955. They remained in that home together until Lou’s passing in April of 2015. Along the way, Bob wore many hats. He owned the Yorktown Coin Laundry and a successful Gravely Tractor sales/service shop. In 1962, he took a job with Muncie Chevrolet where he worked in the garage as a mechanic until his retirement in 1982. Bob was a proud member of the Ramp Rats, a group of men who flew a Grumann Tracker (a submarine hunter) and travelled to air shows. He was a pilot himself, and an encyclopedia of information concerning all things aircraft, especially WWII birds. Bob was also a car enthusiast, loved going to car shows with his 1969 Bonneville, and spoke fondly and often of first new car, a 1937 Chevy. Bob was a member of the Oddfellows lodge for many years and was a board member. Bob and Lou were very generous people. Helping many through their giving to those who were less fortunate. Uncle Bob was a good man, accomplished, smart, true, and honest, and a good friend to many. He will be missed. Bob is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins including Jackie Carr, Barbara Campbell, Jimmy Daugherty, Steven Gasparino, Joann Gasparino, Janet Thames, Dianne Sampson, Sandy Beladino, Janice Henderson, Jennifer Wells, and Steve Crosby to name a few. Great close friends Ed Patterson, Gus and Burr Mathison, and neighbors Carol Willitzer, and Jane Hodson to name a few. He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. and Golden Daugherty; his wife of sixty-five years, Louise; and brother, Eldon Daugherty. The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert S. Smith and staff of great concerned and caring people. It was not uncommon to see Dr. Smith visit Bob at Morrison Woods. Dr. Smith was not only Bob’s physician, but a great caring friend as well. Thank you Doc. The family also wishes to thank the nurses, aides, and caregivers of Morrison Woods; Angie Zook, Cari, Ashley, Elouise, Edie, Kendra, Dawn, and Karen. You are unsung heroes. A special heartfelt thank you to Bob’s friends at Morrison Woods; Ernestine “Ernie”, Rose, and Alice. You made a difference. May God Bless you. Also, thank you to the great group of people at Southern Care Hospice for the outstanding care given to make Bob’s last days comfortable and peaceful. You are appreciated. Per Bob’s request, there will be no calling hours. Graveside services will take place 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2018, in Elm Ridge Memorial Park, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana 47304. Elm Ridge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.elmridgefuneralhome.com.
