Carl Wilford Barrett, born August 8, 1925, in Linn Flat, Rusk County, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was the son of Lemuel Egbert Barrett and Mary Ada Elizabeth Bell, and grew up in East Texas, attending elementary school in Arlam before graduating from Garrison High School.
After graduation, Carl proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Germany and later received the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was also a member of the VFW, the 102nd Infantry Division Association, and the American Legion.
Over the years, Carl built a long and varied career as a salesman. He sold insurance, cars, produce, and antiques—always connecting easily with people and enjoying the opportunity to meet someone new.
Carl married the love of his life, Mona Yarbrough on August 16,1946 and together they built a family rooted in love, humor, and hard work. He was a proud husband, father, and grandfather—known affectionately as “Pops” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Green, and her husband Gary of Hideaway, Texas; his granddaughter Christy McNiel and her husband Gary of Gilmer, Texas; his granddaughter Amanda Green of Dallas, Texas; his great-grandson Andrew McNiel of Hideaway, Texas; and his great-granddaughter Sarah Harris and her husband Chandler of Dallas, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Egbert and Ada Barrett; his wife, Mona Barrett; his brothers Dwain Barrett, Porter “Punkin” Barrett, and Joel Barrett; his sister, Ouida Barrett Cook; and his father- and mother-in-law, Basil and Ruby Lee Yarbrough.
Carl lived a full and active life. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, traveling, playing poker and dominoes, and working in his yard—often chopping wood well into his 90s. He loved antiquing and, in quieter moments, coloring while listening to music. He often said, “He only wanted to do the things that he could be a little above average,” and he lived his life with that spirit: humble, determined, and always striving.
Carl was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and carried his faith with him in all he did.
