Carol Rayburn was born in Sikeston, MO on August 15, 1937, to Lloyd & Ruby (Wells) Rayburn. While in High School her family moved to Sedalia MO and it was there at Smith-Cotton H.S. she met the love of her life, James (Jim) Hieronymus, and so began a great adventure. They married on July 1, 1956, and for the next fifty-five years they adventured together; living in IL, AZ, CA, TX, CO, MO, living in many different homes. They traveled the country, initially in humble fashion but then later with a great deal more substance and style. Carol and Jim established a friend network that crossed the country as they just were able to deeply connect with people.
Their strong Christian faith was evident; not just the verbal proclamation of faith, but the daily example of living it out. Carol is known for being “put together”, both in her clothing and in the styling of her homes. Carol was a remarkable negotiator; watching her buy fine furniture, etc. and then later selling it for more than she paid for it was truly amazing.
Carol provided great support for Jim’s career as he climbed the corporate ladder and in their business ventures. The passing of her husband Jim in 2011 was extremely hard; yet Carol continued her journey with grace and fortitude, even when she felt weak. Carol loved her family; she was a prayer warrior for them and always tried to find the best way to provide guidance and support. Even to her last days, while struggling to speak she shared her faith in Jesus and encouraged her various family members.
Carol also loved football, especially the KC Chiefs, but she followed it all – pro and college. It is appropriate to say that Carol and Jim had an exceptionally large circle of influence, and this influence was impactful in the best way possible. Carol has completed her earthly walk, but she is now home with her Lord and reunited with many of her loved ones.
Carol is survived by son Steven and his wife Rhonda, daughter Tamara Hieronymus and her husband John Neu. Carol was blessed with five grandchildren with four surviving, three spouses of grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Additional survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, one sister and brother-in-law and numerous nephews and nieces.
The family will be having a private celebration of life later. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the church or charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
