Longtime resident and business owner, Floy Bousman, 104, died August 28, 2023. Floy was born June 12, 1919, in Panola County, Texas. She was the daughter of Lolette Knight and Charles Hooker. In 1947, she married Linden (Lindy) Bousman of Nacogdoches.
Floy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother (affectionately known as “Mema”), successful businesswoman, and an inspiring and amazing role model at the age of 104. Floy will be missed deeply by the many people who knew and loved her. In her long and extraordinary life, she was a blessing and inspiration to her family and friends. Floy was happily married to Lindy Bousman until his death in 1983. She was the mother of Letty Bousman Bass and Lynn Bousman Hughes.
Floy grew up with two brothers and two sisters on her family’s cotton farm. She graduated from Carthage High School and attended business school in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1941, she moved to Nacogdoches and was employed by Lawrence Hunt Plumbing for several years. Following World War II, Lindy returned home to Nacogdoches and met Floy. They were married April 20, 1947, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church.
Entrepreneurs at heart, Floy and Lindy founded four successful businesses. They opened their first grocery store in 1950, and they later owned and managed other local businesses – Lindy’s Grocery Store, The House of Gifts, and El Monterrey Restaurant. They enjoyed serving the public and being part of the growth of Nacogdoches, and Floy loved calling it her home for more than eight decades. In recognition of her entrepreneurship, in 2015 she received the American Association of University Women’s award for Business.
She was a member of Heritage Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames XVII Century, and Fredonia Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Colonists. As a devoted member of First United Methodist Church, she served on the Building Committee, and she was a member of United Methodist Church Women Circle VII. Floy was fortunate to live an independent and full life for more than a century, a time of incredible change and significant historical events. Among her greatest joys were spending time with her family and friends, traveling, collecting antiques, playing bridge, and being active in her church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lindy, her parents, and siblings, as well as many close and special friends. She is survived by the family she adored; her daughters Letty (Bill) Bass of Denver, Colorado, and Lynn (Craig) Hughes of Houston, Texas; her grandchildren Will (Brittany) Bass, Laurance (Annie) Bass, Kristin (Ryan) Nelson, and Carrie Bass; and her step grandchildren Michelle (Robert) Strauss and Ryan (Celeste) Hughes. She delighted in her nine great-grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the support and loving care provided by Pat Scroggins and other dedicated caregivers.
A memorial service for family, friends, and caregivers will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023, at First United Methodist Church officiated by Reverend Lorraine Brown.
For those desiring to honor Floy’s memory, please consider a donation to First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Hospital Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961, or to a charity of your choice.
