Dr. Gerald Hill passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 31st 2024 at the age of 88.
He was born in Wichita Falls on June 1st 1936 to the late Lennon Hill and Marie Watson Hill.
Raised in Lubbock, he attended Lubbock High School and Texas Tech University where he received a degree in Industrial Engineering and later a pre medical degree. While at Tech, he was a member of the Army ROTC. He served active duty and was in the Army Reserves until his honorable discharge in 1966.
After completing his engineering degree, he worked for International Harvester designing brake systems for semi trailers. After a few years he decided to go back to school and graduated from South Western Medical School in 1966. He completed his family practice residency in 1967 at John Peter Smith in Fort Worth. He then returned to Lubbock where he had a long and successful medical career spanning over 5 decades.
Most of his medical career was spent at Highland Medical Center where he had a private family practice, covered emergency rooms, performed minor surgeries and delivered over 2,500 babies. Around 1980 he formed Health Plus Medical Group, which was the first walk in clinic of its kind in Lubbock, growing the practice to over nine physicians.
Outside of his medical practice he was one that never stood still and enjoyed numerous hobbies and passions. He had a love of flying, building his first kit airplane in the living room of his parent’s home. He went on to own many single and twin engine aircraft logging around 2500 hours as a private pilot. He was an avid hunter, which took him around the United States, Mexico and Canada. This led to a passion of collecting and shooting guns. He was an avid ammunition re-loader and built several guns with his
garage machine shop. Additionally, he built gun safes, numerous trailers, and was always thinking of the next invention. He designed proto-types for several applications including a fuel injection system and a trailer hitch system. Being hands on, he built several houses in Lubbock and Angel Fire, New Mexico. In everything he did he was a pioneer and innovator always wondering, “What the next move was?”
Out of all of his accomplishments, his family is most proud of his love of Jesus Christ and the way he shared this with others. Whether it was comforting a patient, talking with a friend on the phone, or a stranger at the grocery store, he was always sharing his faith. Many of his friends have said they recalled few conversations where he didn’t mention Jesus or Heaven.
He is preceded in death by his son Chris Hill, first wife Carolyn Hill, and second wife JoAnne Hill.
He is survived by his son James Hill and wife Caryn of Fort Worth, his daughter in law Sheri Hill of Denton, his daughter Holly Clark and husband Jonathan of Cushing, his son Luke Hill of Lubbock, step daughter Lisa Arrott and husband Zane, step son Rodney Benson and wife Tracy, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and his beloved dog Jack.
A memorial Service will be held on January 25th 2025 at 11:00 at Monterey Church of Christ with Dr. Barry Stephens officiating. A private family burial will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Children’s Home of Lubbock.A graveside service for Gerald will be held Friday, January 31, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Pkwy, Dallas, Texas.
