Horace Clyde Sampson

He was baptized as a teenager at Eastview Baptist Church in Kilgore, Texas. He graduated from Kilgore High School in 1943 and joined the Navy. He served aboard the LCI-396 in the Pacific Theater where he was wounded when his vessel struck a mine. He received a Purple Heart and numerous other campaign medals. After the war, he returned to Kilgore to begin his career in grocery management and start a family with Ethel Leota McClendon, whom he married on May 18, 1947. He was a member of the Kilgore Lions Club, and he worked 35 years for the Kroger Grocery Company as a store manager and zone manager. He served as the president of Lake Alazan Incorporated in Nacogdoches, Texas where he enjoyed many years of fishing and spending time with his family. He was a wonderful story teller, had a great sense of humor, and loved to laugh. He enjoyed traveling the country and was a walking road atlas.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at Kilgore City Cemetery with Bro. Travis Arden officiating.

Pallbearers will include Kenneth Sterling, J.D. Sampson, Steven Sampson, Terry Ukrainetz, Ryan Sterling, Mark Sterling, and Jim Sterling.

Family and friends are invited to visitation from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at Cason Monk-Metcalf, 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ethel; daughter, Brenda; and son, Timothy.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Sterling; son, Danny Sampson and wife Sharon; grandchildren, Tony and Shannon, Kenneth and Sheri Sterling, Jim and Savannah Sterling, JD and Tiffany Sampson, Steven and Angela Sampson, Terry and Amanda Ukrainetz, and Jeff and Corrie Smith; his five great grandchildren, Ryan and Mark Sterling, Cooper Sampson, and Audrey and Bran Smith.
