A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with Bro. Ronnie Luman and Bro. David Snelson officiating. Interment will follow at Barnes Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Andy Mettauer, John Mettauer, Bill Wingate, Glen Hill, Robbie Martin, Jim West, John Blankenship, and Dale Lambright.

Family and friends are invited to visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016, at Cason Monk-Metcalf.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John (Boo) Wingate; sister, Sandra (Sandie) Willis; and a daughter, Roxanne Wingate.

His survivors include sons, Ricky Wingate and Levi Hester and wife Sharon; daughters, Robin Hester and Georgia Smiley and husband Phil; and brother, Miles Wingate and wife Joy. Grandchildren include Candice Wingate, Michael Hester and wife Katherine, Larry Hummel Jr., Nikki Sides and husband Robert, Matthew Morgan and wife Michelle, Ethan Wingate, and Amy Hester. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

Sonny was born in Nacogdoches and went to school and graduated from high school in Buffalo, Texas. He moved back to Nacogdoches after high school where he lived his remaining life.

Sonny was a builder by trade. As a teenager, he learned these skills from his dad and worked along side his dad for many many years. He was a very skilled builder and could build anything.

Sonny was a successful businessman and started many companies. He was very well known in the community. He has been a member of the Safari Club, Ducks Unlimited, and NRA.

Sonny’s passion was hunting and fishing. He hunted all over the world and his collection of trophies is amazing. Anyone who knew Sonny knew the love he had for hunting. His adventures took him all over the world.

The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Dr. Mark Cline, Accolade Hospice, the second floor nursing staff at Nacogdoches Medical Center, and the entire staff of Oak Manor Nursing Home for their care and compassion.
