He was born on August 24, 1956, in Houston, TX, to Veda Lee Caveness and John Weldon Caveness Sr. He graduated from Northbrook High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Ag Business from Middle Tennessee State University while on a full football scholarship.
At the center of his life was his devoted wife of 32 years, Connie. Their marriage was a true testament to love, commitment, and resilience, and together they built a life filled with family, faith, and enduring love.
He proudly served the City of Houston as a firefighter for 33 years. His career was marked by courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to protecting others. Beyond his service to the community, he was known as a hard worker and ultimate provider. He often worked multiple jobs at once, making sure his family never went without. Providing was his love language, and though it meant missed games or concerts, his legacy of dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
Football season was his favorite time of year. There was never a college football team whose mascot he didn’t know, and one of his favorite traditions was calling the Hogs or cheering on the Aggies alongside his sister, Welda Gay. If he wasn’t watching a football game, John could be found mowing a yard on his lawnmower or tractor, or sitting in a deer stand. He found beauty in solitude and silence — something most people try to avoid.
Though life brought him many hardships from an early age, he faced them with grit and perseverance. He fought for his peace and joy daily, and has now found both in full measure in the presence of his Savior.
His proudest title was “Papa” to his three grandchildren. He found immeasurable joy and treasured every moment with them. He will always be remembered for his quiet strength, his perseverance, and the love he carried for his family. Even when life was hard, John found a way to put one foot in front of the other.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Kimball Caveness; his children, Danielle (and husband Trevor) Lincoln and Trey (and wife Calli) Caveness; his grandchildren, Jack Weldon, Benjamin Michael, and Mia Grace; his sister, Welda Gay Zinn; and his brother, Gary Caveness; along with his beloved nieces, extended family members, and friends who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, Veda and John Caveness Sr.; his brothers, Ronnie Caveness and Jerry Caveness; and extended family members Robert Zinn, Bennie Zinn, and Jesse Lee Lincoln.
A graveside service will be held at Brookside Cemetery (13747 Eastex Freeway Feeder Rd., Houston, TX 77039) on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM. A celebration of life will follow on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Timbercreek Church (3801 North Street, Nacogdoches, TX 75965). Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM at Timbercreek Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Still Creek Ranch (Venmo: @StillCreekRanch or www.stillcreekranch.org/donate).
John’s legacy of faith, hard work, and devotion to family will live on in all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
