Dr. Robert Patrick Carroll Jr passed away on December 24, 2018 after a brief illness. Dr. Bob, as he was known to his friends was born on October 7, 1940 in Lexington, Virginia to Robert Patrick Carroll, Sr and Alice Robertson Carroll. He and Ruth Fagelson Carroll were married June 18, 1966 in Annandale, Virginia and she survives him.
Bob graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1962 with a BA in Biology. He graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1966 and served a rotating internship at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston Texas followed by two years' service in the US Army including a tour in Vietnam. He and his growing family moved to Nacogdoches in January 1972 to work in the Student Health Center at Stephen F. Austin State University. In 1976 he opened up his own practice and worked in that until 2006 when after a 40-year career as a family practice physician he retired from full time private practice. After he closed his practice he continued to work for the East Texas Community Health Clinic and Burke operating an Alzheimer diagnosis and treatment clinic. Bob had a servant's heart and served in numerous leadership roles for the Nacogdoches County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the national Alzheimer's Association Board as well as many others. Bob was a deacon at Austin Heights Baptist Church, a former member of the Nacogdoches ISD School board and one of the founding physicians as well as a former Chief of Staff for Medical Center Hospital. Other leadership roles included serving as president of the board of the Millard's Crossing Historic Village, the Christian Women's Job Corps and the Nacogdoches Historic Zoning Board. He was particularly proud of his involvement with the formation of the East Texas Chapter of the National Alzheimer's Association. He facilitated the first Alzheimer caregiver support group in Nacogdoches for almost twenty years. Bob Loved all sports but especially Ladyjack basketball. He loved spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren participate in their activities.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Fagelson Carroll, son Michael Joseph Carroll (wife DeNae) of Graham, Texas, daughter Kathleen Carroll Bayliss (fiancé Steve Addyman) of Woodbury, Minnesota, daughter Diane Carroll Havens (husband Hank) of Rockwall, Texas, son Robert Partick Carroll III of Austin, Texas, sister Ann Carroll Weaver (husband John) of Leesburg, Florida, brother-in-law Dale E. Wykoff of Ashville, North Carolina, a niece Carroll Ann Wykoff and nephew Dr. Randolph Wykoff. He is also survived by six grandchildren Samantha Bayliss, Christopher Bayliss, Nolan Carroll, DeLaney Carroll, Haley Havens and Jack Havens.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Alice Carroll Wykoff.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 11:00 AM, First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches, Texas with Reverend Kyle Childress of Austin Heights Baptist Church presiding. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Christian Women's Job Corps, Austin Heights Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
