Russell was born in Center, Texas on July 22, 1936, with a heart for service and a deep appreciation for the simple blessings of everyday living. He served his community as a Sunday School teacher, coaching youth sports, and driving the school bus in Orange, Texas. Being a coach and from a teaching family, he approached every role he held, both personally and professionally, with dedication and pride.
After a long and successful career in store management with Sears and Dillard’s, Russell and Judy retired to their Piney Woods roots to be closer to his two brothers and family. He cherished the rhythm of East Texas life—the community, the traditions, and the people who shaped his journey.
He enjoyed playing dominos, 42, and bridge. He will be remembered for his humor, reading and writing, and spending time with others, especially family. He had a desire to learn and teach. Russell’s legacy lives on in the hearts of his loving extended family, the stories and laughs shared, and the countless times spent together with family over the years.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Hairston; daughter, Julie Pigneri and husband Phil; son, Thad Hairston and wife Loryn; daughter-in-law, Nancy Hairston; grandchildren, Hannah Moix, Hallie Hairston, Preston Pigneri, Blake Pigneri, Aubrey Pigneri, Cullen Hairston, and Sara Hairston; brother, Dr. William Hairston and wife Carla; sister-in-law, Margaret Hairston; and several nieces and nephews.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, William Hardy Hairston and Ira (Russell) Hairston; brother, Thomas Hairston; and son, Paul Hairston.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to a visitation prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 pm, where family and friends will gather to celebrate his life, share stories, and find comfort in community as they say goodbye.

Mr. Hairston will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery in Nacogdoches.
May he rest in peace, leaving a legacy of love that will endure for generations.
