

Douglas Tyrone Smith was born in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, on May 26, 1939.
In his early childhood he grew up in the Monymusk Sugar Estate residential complex in Alley, Vere, in the parish of Clarendon, where his father, Eric, worked. Douglas, or Turone as he was often called, attended Suthermere Preparatory boarding school in St.
Andrew, Kingston before his father decided to move the family to the home where he was raised in Cross Roads, Kingston. Douglas attended high school at Kingston College. He represented his school in "Champs" by participating in both the shot put and the discus events. After graduating from high school, he worked for the Treasury Department in Kingston. He migrated to Brooklyn, New York, in 1960 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force the following year. Upon his honorable military discharge, he began a long career in the computer operations field in the Wall Street financial district. He married Dorothy Saunders in 1968 with who he shared 55 years with.. This blessed union produced two sons, Jerome (deceased in 2000) and Sanjay.
Douglas began his advanced education at St. Francis College, Brooklyn, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He later earned his Masters degree in Business Administration at Long Island University. Upon his early retirement from corporate employment, Douglas pursued a new career in teaching in the New York City public school system in 1999. He taught computer technology and other subjects at a middle school in the Bronx. Selected as a candidate for the New York Teaching Fellows training program, he successfully earned his Master of Science degree in Education in 2003. He retired from teaching in September, 2008 and migrated with Dorothy to Miami in 2017.
Douglas was a former Meals-On-Wheels volunteer and was an active member of All Islands Association, Inc., Mount Vernon, NY, where he served as treasurer for many years. In 2004, he received the Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for outstanding service to the community. He was also a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, New Rochelle, where he served as Treasurer, Financial Secretary, communion assistant, and sang in the church choir for several years.
Douglas believed that one cannot be a non-participant and be a member of a church or other organization that professes to stand for the common good. As we count our blessings we must actively use our skills to help improve the lives of others.
Douglas also had a passion for the classical/Spanish guitar and took lessons for a while to develop his skills for playing the instrument. His other interests included chess, photography, reading, Bible studies, learning the Spanish language, history, and family genealogy. Douglas' faith in God and the teachings of His son, Jesus Christ, enabled him to forgive others and to persevere in trying to live as a Christian.
