

Orville “Dale” Cooney, 84 of Nashua, NH passed away on Monday, June 4, 2012 at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA. He was born in Greenfield, IN on September 11, 1927, the son of the late Claude and Beryl (Hines) Cooney.
Dale has been a Nashua resident for over 50 years. In high school, he was a standout 3rd baseman and played briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies farm league. Soon after, he joined the US Marine Corps serving his country during the Korean War. Dale was very proud of his distinguished military career with the Marines retiring after 21 years as a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel. He then worked at Nashua Corp. and subsequently with Bassett Furniture Co. as their East Coast Regional Manager. He was a dedicated member of St. Philip Greek Orthodox Church where he was very active with the Parish Counsel. He served as past President and Treasurer and was involved in fund raising activities for many years. Dale loved spending time with his family and traveling with his wife, Stella, until her passing in 2009. He enjoyed household projects, was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, and would never back down to a challenge of Sudoku.
He is predeceased by his wife, Stella (Kolocotronis) Cooney in 2009; a son, David A. Cooney; three brothers, Claude, Jr., Raymond E. and Thomas L. Cooney and two sisters, Lillian Fapper and Margaret L. Apple.
Dale is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Cooney of Nashua; a brother, Phillip L. Cooney of New Mexico; a sisters, Suellen Warner of CA; four grandchildren, Gregory Cooney, Erin Verranault and her husband Ryan and Nicholas Cooney all of NH and Rebecca James and her husband Alan of CA; a brother-in-law, Charles Kolocotronis of FL; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours were held on Friday, June 8, 2012 from 11AM to 1PM at St. Philips Greek Orthodox Church, 500 W. Hollis St., Nashua, NH 03062. A Funeral Service was celebrated at the church at 1PM. Burial followed at Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashua. The ZIS-SWEENEY FUNERAL HOME, 26 KINSLEY STREET, NASHUA, NH 03060 has been entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dale’s name to St. Philips Church at the address above.
