Dear Eric, Candy, and Brent,
We are so saddened to learn of your brother/father's death. I am a classmate of your mother's from Vandy Nursing School and we are still in shock about her death and cannot imagine what a difficult this time has been for your family. We, your mother's classmates, were blessed to get to know Al. He was wonderful back then and I am certain from his many tributes, like your mother's,  that he continued to achieve professionally and in the realm of human kindness. Your mother's eyes used to sparkle so brightly when she talked about him when they were first dating and they were like a couple of cute kids in a candy store whenever we would see them together. True soulmates. There just are not adequate words to tell you how sorry we are for your loss, particularly in light of the proximity of their deaths. We pray that time will lessen the acuteness of your pain and that some sort of visualization of them together will help assuage your suffering. Being from their family, you are most certainly of hearty and faith-filled stock. May you draw deeply of that well in the days ahead.

I just learned of Alan's death and want to extend my sympathies to his family. Alan and I go back a long way to grade school and we spent a great deal of time together when our parents moved to Kent Drive where we lived across the street from each other. I remember the wonderful trip we took together with Dick Larson and Jim Ashbrook to see the USA in his father's Chevy. We were 16 or 17 and drove thousands of miles all over the West. I still can't believe our parents let us do it! When we returned, Alan's Dad had to sell the car because he couldn't stand the smell left in the car. Alan was a truly wonderful person and I'm lucky that he was my friend.

Dear Candy and Brent,
Ve and I are thinking of you and your beloved mother and father that you have lost this year.  They were outstanding, special people who gave us that were lucky enough to be around them an aura of warmth, friendship, care that we will miss deeply.  As a friend and college of your father, I came to know him as an intelligent and trusted friend as well as an outstanding and professional surgeon.  He showed enormous strength and courage in his hard fought  personal battles.  He was always a friend to rely on.
We will have him and your mother in our hearts.

Thinking of you and sending heartfelt sympathy in the loss of your Father, Grand Father, friend, neighbor, classmate, and for many, physician.

My association with Dr. Fruin was in the role of a nurse (LPN) through Neurosurgery clinic which were held at the Omaha VAMC before his retirement.

In comparison to so many others  I worked occasionally with Dr. Fruin, for just a few moments in time 
My memories of Dr. Fruin as I recall,  were of his genuine concern for his patients. His main objective and goals seemed to me, were to be able to provide his best for his patients. Meeting his  patient’s physical  needs as well as his specialty, Neuro-surgical needs.

Reading the entries entered in this Guest book for Dr. Fruin, demonstrates to me, how each of us have the ability to positively impact, influence, encourage one another, just as he did time after time. 

That is remarkable in itself. What a legacy. It sounds to me, that Dr. Fruin lived his life by setting a standard  for himself to be Christ like in character. That is awesome.

May you find comfort in the days ahead with family, friends, cherished memories and the light of Christ to guide you through  this  season of grieving.

A candle is lit in memory of Alan by his Mathematics teachers and students, including Ken Retzer, Hal Gilmore (deceased), Dave Rine, and David Steele (deceased) and many others in that group who are too numerous to mention.

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Alan Fruin. I was his U-High Advanced Algebra teacher and remember him and his brother Eric very well.. It is heartwarming to see how many U-High classmates have extended sympathy. We pray that your faith in God and the knowledge that the resurrection is real will comfort all who grieve at Alan's passing. I remember his valedictorial address at his graduation was classic and am pleased to know he devoted his career to neurosurgery for I worked for a time in Montreal as a surgical orderly assisting pioneer brain surgeon Dr. Wilder Penfield. I would like to share a poem I wrote many years ago upon the passing of Dr. Clyde T.McCormick, head of the Illinois State Mathematics Department.

Dear Eric,

Alan was one of the kindest people I have known in my life.  He was caring of everyone and did so many nice things for others.  I will treasure my wonderful memories of him from our days at Metcalf and U-High.  I remember how a group of us would walk home together and cut through your yard to save a few steps to our houses.  His thoughtfulness and caring for all his classmates will remain with me forever. He was special!

To Alan's children and grandchildren ,  know that you had a very wonderful dad and grandfather.  Treasure the memories of happy times you shared together.  Memories last forever.

Candy and Brent,  I was so sorry to read of your father's passing.  I was not aware that you had already lost your mother.  God be with you and your families.  Your 3rd grade teacher at MOQ,

So sorry to hear of Alan's passing. I went to Metcalf and University High School with him and have fond memories.

My condolences to the family.

I have many happy memories of Alan from our childhood days in north Normal.  His basketball court was the best in the neighborhood, and many football games took place in the side yard with Alan, Eric, et al.  Alan and I were teammates on the U. High golf team for a couple of years, and I remember him as a gentleman and dogged competitor.  My prayer is that many wonderful memories will sustain the family in the months and years ahead.

Alan was the very first person I met when I started 4 yr.old kindergarten at Metcalf grade school. We remained friends since then. So glad I got to see him one more time just two weeks ago. My prayers are with his children.

It was a wonderful experience to be a fellow class mate of Alan's at the University High School. Alan frequently challenged me to improve my physical training routine, which I have tried to honor in life. It was especially good to see how Alan was both an excellent teacher and practitioner of Neuro medicine. We here in the greater Kansas City and Washington DC areas wish to pass along our deepest sympathy to Eric, the children and the grand children. Know hat your family will always be in our hearts. So sorry to hear of Alan's death. I send special sympathy to brother Eric.  Great memories of family vacations in Biloxi when we were growing up.

As a neurosurgery social worker at Crighton (St. Joseph's Hospital) in the late 80's and early 90's I made weekly rounds with Dr. Fruin.  He was a delightful man with a great sense of humor.  He helped so many patients improve their quality of life and he was a highly regarded member of the medical staff.  My sincere condolences to his family.

My sincerest condolences on your loss of Alan.  He was an outstanding achiever in all respects as I recall.  I have the fondest memories of playing with you guys, even 60+ years ago.  Always cherish those happy times.

....so so sorry to hear of Alan's death.  Having gone to Metcalf and U.High (graduated in class of 1958), I happen to know that Alan was a wonderful student, but more importantly, he was a wonderful person.  My thoughts and prayers go out to the family as I know he will be sorely missed until you meet again in heaven.

My husband and I have fond memories of Alan from high school days.  Remembering how he was then brings a laugh to us.  We are saddened by the news.
