

FRUIN, Alan Hartman, was born and raised in Normal, Illinois in 1941. Passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011. He graduated from University High School in 1960. After completing a Bachelor’s of Science at Vanderbilt University in 1963, he went on to graduate from Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1967. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Vanderbilt in 1973. He went on to practice neurosurgery in Omaha, Nebraska where he was Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery at Creighton University from 1975-2000. After retiring from his practice, he and his wife Carolyn returned to Nashville. Upon his return, he offered his services to the Department of Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt. He spent the last decade taking care of patients at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital and invested a significant amount of time in the education of neurosurgery residents. In 2008, he was the recipient of the first annual Robert S. McCleery Master Teacher Award for Surgical Resident Education. He is preceded in death by his parents Leon (Al) and Virginia Fruin and his wife Carolyn. Alan is survived by son Alex Brent Fruin (Brandi), daughter Candy Fruin Stefansic (Jim), grandchildren Clara, Jack, Thomas, Althea, and Eva, and his brother Eric Fruin. Visitation will be held at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 23rd 5:30pm-7:30pm. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, August 24th 10:00am at Christ the King Catholic Church on Belmont Blvd. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery on Lebanon Road. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Canby Robinson Society at Vanderbilt University Medical Center..Arrangements under the direction of Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home, Nashville, Tennessee.
