Ann Porter Ring, affectionately known as “Big Mom,” a nickname given to her by her husband Henry Grady Ring Sr., “Big Daddy” when she was pregnant with their son Henry Grady Ring Jr. While Big Mom only stood 4’11”, she was a true embodiment of Southern warmth and spirit. For 97 years, she was her family’s cherished matriarch whose legacy resonates with all who knew her. Born in Memphis, she was the youngest of five children and filled every room with infectious joy and boundless love.
Ann was known for her enthusiastic “woohoo” when welcoming family and friends into her home or entering her families’ homes. Her passion for teaching shone brightly during her 20 years as a kindergarten teacher at Brook Hollow Baptist Church and her day-to-day interactions with her great-grandchildren.
A natural at making anyone feel welcomed and loved, Ann was the life of the party. She never missed an opportunity to dance, laugh, smile, sing and talk with those around her, especially with a Jack Daniel’s on the rocks in hand. Her presence filled her community roles, from singing in the church choir to enjoying games of bridge and rounds of golf. She even teamed up with Big Daddy for bowling nights.
Ann’s kitchen told stories of comfort through her famous homemade peach ice cream and rolls, a must-have at any family gathering. Her quilts and T-shirt blankets have wrapped many with love and care. Above all, her door was always open, and her unwavering faith was always present with, “God loves you, and so do I.”
Big Mom and Big Daddy now reunite, leaving behind fond memories and a legacy of joy and kindness. Her life encourages us to cherish each moment, echoing her Southern grace, warm laughter and welcoming spirit.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Henry “Grady” Ring Sr., her five siblings and their spouses.
Big Mom is survived by her two children, Henry “Grady” Ring Jr. and Connie Ring June (Jim), her grandchildren, Brittany Way, Jennifer Lay (Marc) and Katie Stuart (Jeremy). She has five great-grandchildren: Reagan Way, Hunter and Lila Stuart, Sierra Boyd, and Ava Lay.
A gathering of family and friends for Big Mom will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204.
