Charles Arthur Snider, Jr, age 89, of Nashville, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was born January 20, 1926, in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Elizabeth (Sellers) Snider. Known to family and most friends as Art, he is survived by his children: Pamela (and Marc) Papai, and Thomas (and Anne) Snider, 5 grandchildren (Catherine, Sam, Melanie, Emily, and Charlie), and one great grandchild (Rowan). His wife Joan (nee Fleegal) preceded him in death in 2012 and his eldest son Daniel in 2011.
Art joined the Navy late in World War II in the flight training program but was honorably discharged before deploying due to the war’s end. His love of flying and of the Christian gospel continued as he served in missionary aviation. He graduated King’s College in 1950, meeting and then marrying Joan Fleegal the same year, going to flight school with Moody Bible Institute and beginning a twenty year tour with Mission Aviation Fellowship in Honduras, Central America.
Returning to the US in 1973, he worked with Pocket Testament League and in decades of jail ministry, largely with Hispanic prisoners, until the time of his death.
Art was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville, where he joyfully sang in the choir. He had sung in numerous groups his entire adult life.
The center of his life was Jesus Christ, and he is fondly remembered not only by his family but by thousands whose lives he touched.
Memorial services will be held at 11am on Friday, June 12, 2015 at Immanuel Baptist Church with visitation beginning at 9am. Art’s cremated remains will be placed with his wife Joan in the columbarium of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
