
F. Carter Philips died on July 8, 2021. Born on April 18, 1943 to Frank and Florence Philips in Brooklyn, New York, he was raised in Winston-Salem, NC where he met his wife Linda Downs Philips. After graduating from RJ Reynolds High School, he attended Vanderbilt University where he majored in Latin and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He continued his studies at the University of Pennsylvania where he earned a Ph. D. He then returned to Vanderbilt University where he taught in the Department of Classical Studies for 38 years and served in a variety of leadership positions including Chair of the Department of Classical Studies, Associate Dean for Academics for the College of Arts and Science, and for 22 years, University Marshall in charge of Vanderbilt’s Commencement. He was an active member and lay leader of Saint Andrew's Anglican Church and enjoyed reading, classical music, theater and travel.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda, as well as his daughter Elizabeth Philips Baird of Burke, VA and her family – COL Kevin M. Baird, Matthew P. Baird and Kristen M. Baird. He is also survived by his brother, William E. Philips of Salem, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert E. Philips.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Health Center of Richland Place for the care they gave Mr. Philips for the last 2 years.
A requiem mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 15 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3501 Central Avenue.
